My dad, brother, and me came to Houston in 2012. Grew up in North LA and never lived anywhere else until after finishing college and baseball. Bounced around the South and Midwest for a few years doing contract landman work. Packed up and bailed on a job we were working in Canton, OH and came to Houston on a semi-whim. I knew I wanted a career doing the oil & gas thing and this was the most logical place to be. Best move we ever made was coming to Texas. Now have our own little company and it's worked out pretty well. There isn't a better city in America for an O&G guy than where you're headed dude good luck

Also, live inside the loop if you can afford it. It sounds like you can. I lived in Memorial Hills Apts for a couple years. It's kinda tucked away in between Washington and Memorial on Scotland St. Best apartments on that side of town man they were great. Midtown for a year. Now in a house in the Heights. All great neighborhoods, really, depending on what kind of vibe you're looking for.

I've had Champion and NRG. Champion was better for me but they're both fine. Similar pricing and both have good websites for paying the bills, customer service, etc.

Could I interest you in a slightly used Audi with a little front bumper damage? Available in the Houston area. Willing you cut you a deal....

No, I know a ton of people that do that daily. No traffic on your way in, decent traffic on your way back but not too bad.

Bumping this...Have been officially moved into Houston apartment for 3 weeks or so. Dire Wolf, you were right. Commute hasn't been too bad. About 15 in morning and 25 in afternoon, which is right about what my Metairie to NOLA CBD commute was.

No you are not. Blue Oak would not be ranked in the top 100 BBQ places in Houston.

Dude, I've tried Gatlin's, Pinkertons, Rays BBQ Shack, Brookstreet, and Harris Country general store, and I'd take Blue Oak over all of them. Gatlin's wings were good, but they only have BBQ or sweet style sauces. Blue Oak's inferno and rooster sauces are awesome.

Still need to make it to Pit Room, Killens, Corkscrew, etc.

But have you tried Rudy's after filling up your car?

Haven't tried Rudy's yet. Is it good or is that a joke?

Here's my running list of all places I've visited in Houston. I started a google doc just to keep track since there are so many places in this city, and I write a little note to know what to make repeat visit to or one and done.

I've been there and it is pretty good. Nothing special though, but has a cool concept. BBQ isn't anything to rave about..

Lived in Houston for a decade.. recently moved back to NOLA.. best burger in Houston is at a place called Pappas Burger.. their Peppercorn Ranch burger is in my alltime Top Five.. also Beck's Prime has a great burger.. and Rudy's is really good BBQ for a chain; but i lived in the Loop so Rudy's wasnt always easy to get since they are mostly located on the far reaches of town off the interstates.

In re to Houston in general, it was great for me career-wise, but i wasnt a big fan of the city in general since it is generic, and indistinguishable from other cities; it could literally be Cleveland or Kansas City, and you wouldn't know it... Also I'm not a fan of the Texas 'we are the center of the universe' mentality.... on the good side, Houston a really easy drive to Baton Rouge for LSU games; i drove to BR for every home game, and it only takes about 4 hrs if youre smart and dont get caught in traffic leading up to the bridge in BR.. and there are lots of Saints fans in Houston, and even more LSU fans-- I'd estimate more LSU fans in Houston per capita than in New Orleans, it will astound you... so enjoy the place, get some good food, make a couple dollars bills and maybe we'll see you back in NOLA one day.

Blue Oak is pretty awesome, that was a pretty clown statement by that guy.

Need to add the Queen Vic, Helen, Hugo's, red lion (curry wings are the goat), and a lot of Chinatown to your list.

Definitely was planning to hit up Hugo's soon.

Any Restaurant Week recommendations that look good, deal wise?
