Nola native, making the tough decision to follow the O&G money and take a new position with company. Mitch can add me to his great migration statistics.

I know...Houston the worst. But it is what it is. Hopefully won't be more than a couple years over there.

Single, no kids, oldish young guy.

Office location will be energy corridor. Looking to stay inside the loop.

Any advice on places to live? Think I will rent for a while before learn the area. Looking at Rice Military/Washington Ave area. Want a manageable commute but don't want to live out in the suburbs.

July edit: I ended up renting an apartment on Washington/Sawyer for the short term. May buy something in a year. Any general Houston food/drinks/fun/deals advice appreciated.

City centre is nice and close

Many benefits to the city, give it a year or so to adjust

Inside loop is fun but cinco ranch area is growing and may provide housing appreciation

The brain drain continues. Great work Louisiana voters.

Single guys should stay in Midtown. Or around that area. Houston is great; you will get an immediate raise with taxes and it also includes a higher standard of living.

Don't let the big concrete and steel things scare you; that's just Texas investing in infrastructure and new schools.

Heard that a million times. The money here is tough to leave.

What are you comfortable in paying a month in rent?

I currently live in the area and I really enjoy it. Near Memorial Park and Buffalo Bayou - along with a ton of good restaurants and bars. Proximity to Memorial Dr and I-10 is a huge plus. There's plenty of apartment complexes and townhouses available for lease in the area. Would suggest looking at apartments/townhouses between Memorial Dr and Washington Ave.

2000

Been looking at places to buy (seems like only townhomes in my price range), places to rent, and apartment complexes.

These apartments are crazy with the dynamic pricing that changes every day depending on availability.

Anyone have anything good/bad to say about 2411 Washington or Memorial by Windsor?

This is probably your best bet for keeping your commute reasonable to the corridor and not far from nightlife. Right there off 10 and a short uber ride to downtown/upper kirby/heights areas.

Eta I lived at the District at Washington a 3-4 years back when it was brand new and enjoyed it.

Half of Houston is from Louisiana, or so it seems.

Many have moved to Houston and don't return. Reasons are endless but include: higher salaries, cheaper cost of living, much better schools, state invests in infrastructure and plans into the future, loaded with LSU fans, cheaper housing prices (especially in the burbs of Houston).

Been considering moving to the Houston area too. Better job market and schools. I have a family so it's a little bigger of a move for us. Tired of paying 11k for private school. Likely will move to the burbs if I pull the trigger. Don't care about nightlife

Many have wrestled with that in Houston and thats a reason for the urban sprawl. Tack on 20 minutes to your commute and you can live in a 5 bedroom house, 3300 sq ft with a pool for the same price as the townhome.

I moved from New Orleans to Houston a year and a half ago for O&G. I find myself in New Orleans at least once a month if not more. Trying to find work back in the big easy asap.

I'd get something on the west side inner loop close to I-10. Lots of nice apartments around Memorial Park and up and down Alan Pkwy. That'll be easiest for your commute.

Lots of green space, hike and bike trails, etc in that area and if you're a golfer, Memorial Park course is one of the nicest muni courses in the nation.
