To be fair he pretty much said it was something to give away to those who needed it and not base your life on earthly treasures. It's pretty clear what his stance was, and that was to downplay money because he knew it was the number one thing competing with the heart of man.
Not money, but the love of money, to be correct...

quote:21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer explains this story really well in his book The Cost Of Discipleship. The young rich man knows the commandments, but wants to go beyond them. He asks his question of Jesus out of a piety centered on himself, pretending he is ignorant of the answer. We are called to obedience of God and fellowship with Christ, Jesus answers the young man offering him the opportunity to follow Him. Jesus wants to make sure the young man doesn't see discipleship as the opportunity for an adventure that he could turn away from and head back to his money and old life. Jesus exposes that the mans possessions are literally the thing keeping him from following Jesus, but also that the mans original question about what he must do is based on his desire to feel good about himself rather than truly be obedient to God.
Excellent post and to go a bit further, Jesus was making it clear that you can't buy your way into Heaven.
Ephesians Chapter 2
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

doing works of the lord certainly can help you to heaven. Bragging about it for self gratification no

There's tons more scripture reiterating this as well but that's a great passage.
Meh, people always take Jesus's words out of context when they're promoting socialism. The truth is that Jesus wanted his followers to have wealth and set an example for others to follow. Jesus had no patience for the sin of poverty and laziness.

I disagree, but this is not the place for that discussion.

that book of the bible is one cited by Martin Luther in his quest against Indulgences and the start of the Lutheran movement.

I like to compare the story of the rich man not being able to sell his possessions to the story of the man who while working in the field discovered a treasure. He sold everything he had and bought that field.
Jesus wants you to be all in. He wants you to see following him as a treasure worthy of selling everything else so that you can have that treasure.

It's like no one has thought this was a scam before last night? I don't get the hype.
That's not the point. The point of the segment was to show you the "why," not the "what." You can't watch that segment and pretend you didn't learn anything new.

Pectus, this was John Oliver speaking. He is the voice of my generation. No one has even come close to approaching this topic in this manner...ever.
He's a comedian and the show is comedy

I already did. The Conservative Drones just attacked John Oliver.

All the believers were together

They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need
It does not say:
The magistrate/praetor/governor took and sold their property to give to anyone who had need. They (i.e., "all the believers") did this of their own volition, which is what He preached/encouraged.
Think about it, which rich man will get into Heaven?
1) the rich man whose wealth is forcibly taken from him and given to the poor, whom he will resent and hate for the rest of his days (along with the government that did it);
or,
2) the rich man who hears Jesus' message, takes it to heart, and freely divests all of his wealth and gives it to the poor?
Jesus provided a roadmap to salvation, not a system of government.

I am against it? The first couple of minutes were very funny, eventually it turned into a boring diatrib though.
Maybe some didn't know these types of scams existed or haven't seen the dozens of similar pieces done over the years. So I apologize for assuming this was common knowledge.
