Recording you receive when calling Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption

quote:

John Oliver, otherwise known as the man who makes us all feel bad about ourselves on Monday mornings, has turned his attentions to the world of televangelism this week, and he really doesn’t like what he sees.

“This is about the churches that exploit people’s faith for monetary gain,” he said, and proceeded to show a series of depressing/damning clips of televangelists asking for “seed money” on their programs, like asking people deep in debt to give the church $1,000 to sow a “seed” to God that will eventually get rid of that debt. Or, in one particularly horrific case, asking someone to “sow” money into a church instead of seeking treatment for cancer.

That was awesome! Anyone who comes here and defends prosperity doctrine is a moron.

It is a shame he didn't go after Joel Osteen. That would have been great.

Largest scam in the world. Even Jesus was against money and organized religion. And these guys get all of that cash tax free.

Only bad thing is that he's totally preaching to the choir. How many people who are dumb enough to send money to these TV grifters would be tuning in to Last Week Tonight? I'm thinking those two demographics don't have a lot of overlap.

I was expecting a mention of Peter Popoff as well, since The Amazing Randi had essentially pants that mother fricker two decades ago and he's STILL on TV bilking people out of their money.

I'm not familiar enough with Olsteen and those types to know, but are they as blatant in terms of begging for money and straight up declaring miracles will take place if they get it...or is it less revival tent bullshite and a slicker message of "it's ok to make a bunch of money, just look at me!" sort of thing?

True. Also, people who support televangelists will probably never be convinced that it is all really a scam. However, raising awareness of the tax loopholes surrounding these organizations is a good idea (even if it is for the "preaching to the choir" crowd).

Honestly, that's the case with a majority of his topics if you think about it. He's occasionally gone a direction I disagreed with, but for the most part of I already don't feel that way about an issue I'm open enough to hear his point.

On the other hand...when this gets thrown around social media it will eventually end up in people's news feeds that did not see it, and shite will hit the fan. I'm quite sure that if I was so inclined I could alienate about a third of the people on my Facebook list if I posted a link to this video...

Joel Osteen is obviously a clown.

But nothing beats Peter Popoff...this dude sold tiny bags of water to people and told them to give up their life savings.

Jesus talked more about money in the bible than he does heaven and hell combined.

To be fair he pretty much said it was something to give away to those who needed it and not base your life on earthly treasures. It's pretty clear what his stance was, and that was to downplay money because he knew it was the number one thing competing with the heart of man.

Yeah, the New Testament is pretty straightforward when it comes to wealth. (Mt. 19:21-24)

quote:

21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
