Simply not true. While you do have to be smart, it should read that they are harder working than 99.5% of the population.

once you pass the entry point of med school, everyone is smart. I would prefer someone will great dexterity, a steady hand, and someone with a great ability to translate 2d images like a CT scan into 3d reality, over someone who is book smart.

Well, neurosurgeons themselves disagree.

Well, at least two people who allege to be neurosurgeons on random websites.

I used to have to depose a lot of neurosurgeons. They were all exceptionally bright. As SFP said, to even get a residency in neurosurgery, you have to be the elite of the elite in terms of medical aptitude.

Not a characteristic of objective, intelligent people when presented with data to the contrary.

You are probably smart enough to recognize this bias or perhaps your axe grinder may be distracting you...

Ok Rex:

47 year old is stat flighted to the ER from a multi vehicle collision. You are called to respond. Upon initial examination the patient is intubated and in a C collar. The patient will open their eyes to deep sternal rub but does not follow commands - the patient also postures with sternal rub. Both pupils are mydriatic. The patient's vitals are as follows: BP 188/97 HR 34 RR 14 and irregular.

Few easy questions:

What is the patient's GCS status?

How do you explain the vital signs?

Would administration of an antihypertensive agent be a logical first step in management?

Should you order a head CT? What might it show? Does it matter if you use contrast?

How about the administration of a diuretic? Which one? Does administration of hypertonic saline make sense?

What is the definitive treatment for this patient?

You have 5 minutes.

Obviously, a number of not very smart people in this thread have incorrectly equated "not very smart" with "stupid".

Are brain surgeons more intelligent on average than the general population? Quite probably. That also can be said about a number of other professions.

But can a person of not-so-extraordinary intelligence be a brain surgeon? As I posted, neurosurgeons, themselves, say yes.

Really?

As for the intelligence requirement, I think the average person has the intellectual ability to handle the spatial reasoning requirements for chemistry.

With respect to organic vs. inorganic, I think inorganic tends to be a little a bit more challenging.

And more... Really?

Here’s the key point, as far as organic chemistry is concerned: the course doesn’t test intelligence so much as it tests commitment.
