Oh, I'll take a vet over a neurosurgeon any day. They gotta be able to cure a lizard, a chicken, a pig, a frog...all on the same day.

Maybe not such a comical point.

Anyway, I believe that a large factor in the general presumption that brain surgeons are automatically highly intelligent is the fact that so few people would want stupid persons operating on their brains... which, of course, are the centers of cognition in the first place.

likely him just being pretentious

I would be willing to bet that he would likely not be impressed with the intelligence of most of the people he encounters

Fwiw the subgroup in medicine that has the greatest overall medical intelligence is the well rounded specialist in internal medicine or critical care

As far a general intelligence, a surgical or medical subspecialist. Due in large part to the financial and lifestyle freedom afforded by their profession (interests can lie outside of medicine)

INB4 the engineers say they had a harder curriculum.

Some of the curriculum is harder, but people cannot grasp the sheer volume and depth of the info we have to learn in med school. The smarter doc's are better able to integrate it into practice and connect the dots.

To the OP, you have to be pretty smart to be a neurosurgeon. You have to be extremely smart to be one of the skill level and achievement of Dr. Carson. Anybody questioning his intellect is a fricking idiot.

so even by your own evidence, his level of "smart" means "genius", which is a bit elevated compared to the context you're using

why would he qualify his statement with this level of intelligence if he was referring to a general commentary on intelligence and not a biased view based on a very specific grouping of people?

I think his definition of 'smart' is skewed. If you hang around brain surgeons and rocket scientists all the time, your definition of average will become the average for that field.

It's like being a photographer for Victoria's Secret. You would start thinking models were average. Then you would start posting on the OT where everyone agrees with you.

Nope. And that's not just my opinion.

Your assertion is a Catch 22, because I can present opinions by other neurosurgeons who state otherwise.

Wrong. Derm is the correct answer. VERY few residency spots. High pay with low stress and great hours. Pretty much have to be number one in you class and put in extra hours kissing arse and politic'n.

Really is more personality types that seem to draw people to different specialties. And surgeons tend to be lower on the GPA/class rank than the others you mentioned. And internist? Maybe in the old days, but you can't make a living seeing a handful of sick arse medicare patients. Internal medicine is just a stepping stone to sub-specialties.

There has always been jokes and references to being as smart as a brain surgeon or "this isn't brain surgery," but now that a Republican presidential candidate is one it's, "really not that impressive."

I agree that Derm is the most competitive speciality. Do they possess the most medical knowledge? Nope (see brilliant internist, critical care specialist i.e House MD). Derm is way too narrow in focus to make that claim.

I have a HS buddy that nobody would've considered smart who is a neurosurgeon now. Had mediocre grades in HS and on standardized tests. He just started working very hard his junior year of college, and has continued to do so

You're advancing my point. There are some very intelligent lawyers and some not-so-bright ones.

For general surgery sure, but otherwise that statement is pretty false. Ortho, neurosurgery, ENT, and Integrated plastics are the most competitive along with Derm. Notice anything about that list? 4 of those are surgical subspecialties
