What context is that? I presented opinions by fellow neurosurgeons.

ignoring the fact that they're Q/A boards on the internet

they're speaking in terms of the medical field and not generally. their field itself is elevated above normal people

quote:

So, you're saying that neurosurgeons, themselves, are completely ignorant of their own qualifications?

nope

saying you're not the smartest section of the medical field is not saying you're not smart

you're ignoring the baseline level of intelligence necessary to even get into this discussion and trying to make this a very general discussion

I would rather have a bottle in front me instead of a frontal lobotomy

Neurosurgeons are extremely intelligent. However, most are pricks with limited social intelligence (due in large part to the hellacious training they undergo and the massive cluster fricks they have to deal with on a routine basis).

Sorry, but you're mischaracterizing what they're saying. Read it again.

I don't think you have to be elite, genius level smart, but you need to be reasonably intelligent and you better be a damn hard worker with great indurance to survive a surgery internship.

Doesn't change the fact that I don't care for Carson. I don't think he's dumb though.

That's because you don't know anything about Chemistry.

How does having a socialist accountant work?

"Well Mr. Businessowner, I found $10,000 in tax deductions for you. But I'm not going to take them, because you need to give your fair share."

As others have said, when you're talking about a group of doctors talking about "geniuses" in their midst, you're talking about the elite of the elite. Not "smart" in terms of the guy on the street. By the time you've met the qualifications for medical school and then a very competitive residency, you're not exactly talking about dummies even at the bottom of the barrel.
I went to UNO on a Top Ten scholarship and got into LSU Dental School after 3 years of college. Midway through dental school I was 6th in my class, and I already knew I wasn't getting one of the two Ortho residency spots. And that's to put braces on teeth - not to cut into peoples' brains or spinal cords. Yeah - you have to be pretty fricking smart to be a brain surgeon. Stupid question.

Specialized branches of fields are sometimes significantly more difficult and may require more intelligence.

This thread is not about Ben Carson except in a coincidental way. It's about exploding a certain cultural myth.

I have not called them dummies.

Interestingly, though, as I've previously quoted, here's what one neurosurgeon, himself, says:

quote:

That you have to be really smart to be a brain surgeon. I know a lot of people who are not smart, who are just hard workers and got through their residency.

I'll grant you that, but you must admit your posting history the OT is going to assume you are staking a negative claim against Carson. I'm not a republican by the way. With this crappy field on both sides I'm not really sure what I am, other than sad about the state of political affairs in the US.
