re: Are sandals resorts trashy?

The real question isn't about sandals...the real question is:
Is preferring quantity of food and booze over quality on a beach more preferred over exploring other cultures, history, and parts of the world trashy?

My wife and I went to the one in the Bahamas 10 years ago for our honeymoon. Stayed like 5 or 6 nights. My only recommendation is find the best two dinner restaurants and alternate eating there every night. We had two nice dinners the whole time we were there. The second night and the last. The first night we did the hibachi place and it was okay. They had some restaurant over on another private island and you had to ride a little boat to it. It was good for lunch but sucked at dinner. The last night we ate at the French restaurant. It was the best meal of the week. Wish we had not been eager to try them all and just repeated the best two.
The beach was fine. The endless drinks were great. It was also mid May so it wasn't super crowded.

I got married at the one with the golf course on St. Lucia. Food was just as good as most restaurants and the place was very nice IMO. Only left the resort to travel to another sandals on the island to eat dinner.

I stayed at two all inclusive resorts with one being sandals. I will never do it again.
I got the whole enchilada - Butler service, private balcony/pool, excursions. Everything.
My first night I realized I made a mistake. To me it is like a older version of spring break.
I booked a sunset cruise excursion (extra money). On the website it looked like a peaceful cruise along with a few other couples with white glove service. When we arrived it was a boat overloaded with about 75 people on it, and was a booze cruise.
The food - if you live in New Orleans or the South in general you will be very disappointed. You would think there would be fresh fish/seafood. Its all flown in frozen food. Nothing to write home about.
Its not terrible but it is underwhelming. Don't believe the commercials or website.

Despite the suggestive phrasing, this is the basic question. Just because you want to relax on the beach doesn't mean you're trashy. We go on a lot of trips where we go out and see everything and do everything and for our honeymoon we just wanted to go somewhere where we could lay down and relax for a week. And I wanted somewhere where I didn't have to carry a wallet or plan a single thing. If that's what you're looking for, Sandals will deliver that.
I would also look at Excellence resorts though as I have heard great things as well. Other people's description of the three Sandals resorts on St. Lucia are pretty accurate. If you want to be at a small place, go with Halcyon. The Grande had the best beach by far...it was on a bay so the water was very calm and nice. La Toc was where we stayed and our favorite because it was on hills and we could stay at the pool by the butlers suites for quiet or go down to the beach. The beach there was a little smaller and the water was way more rough. Again, just depends what you want.

Secrets resorts are awesome. Check out "The Vine" in Cancun.

I think Sandals gets a bad rep by people just because its the "Face" or Flagship of All inclusives.
That said for our honeymoon we went to an Excellence resort. A decent bit cheaper than Sandals and seriously all we could ask for in an All inclusive. I would recommend at least giving it a look. They have one on Punta Cana
We went a couple times to the Excellence resorts in cancun. Great experience. You literally have to do nothing.
If you do excellence, i'd recommend getting the swim up rooms on the first floor and the vip package.
With the swim up room you will have some sliding glass doors that goes directly to a pool. this eliminates needing to carry all kind of shite to the pool area. Plus each pool area has its own bar.
The vip package gets you a couple little perks like better alcohol (grey goose).
We were able to find some coupons online that saved us a few hundred dollars.
Finally you have to go to the spa. Then have a huge building where you do some hydro therapy and massage. You can do it as a couple. But make sure you have nothing planned for the rest of the day. After you get out of that you are so relaxed you don't want to do anything.

All inclusive vacations are the worst. Can you just wheel my bed to pool area, no to the buffet I'm hungry.

I stayed at Body Holiday in St. Lucia over the summer. I loved it most for the number of people (wasn't overwhelming at all), the food (great quality) and the bonus stuff (mind and body place, so massages and treatments and down the line were all included). They also had daily sessions where you could go do yoga, pool volleyball, aerobics, water sports, etc.
I flew in with tons of people who were going to Sandals and it was all newlyweds. I enjoyed being at a non-chain place because it didn't feel like spring break.. I think I was one of only a few Americans there. All European.

dont expect to see much of the area you are visiting, its like staying at a nice backyard pool. My friend went to Turks & Caicos Sandals, came back bragging. The dude and his family never left the resort, what a sh*tty vacation and waste of $

Both people going on this trip are 31. Not looking to go jersey shore crazy while we're there, just going to relax. I see that the for reservation thing is a big deal to many. Are you able to make reservations before you arrive at the resort - as in can one do research on where they want to eat and then call the resort before arriving to make reservations for the entire stay?

We most likely want these people staying in the resort and not fricking up our international travel reputation anymore than they already do.

I went to St Lucia for our honeymoon. I felt it was quite a bit of travel for a similar resort in Jamaica or even closer. We flew from ATL to Jamaica and then connected for another long flight. Unless Jamaica or somewhere closer does not have the same quality sandals resorts, I would not travel that far for a beach.

Just got back from the Dominican Republic Excellence last night. It was ok not excellent. Beds are miserably hard and AC barely kept you from sweating. Electricity went out first night we were there and the room was a sweltering hot box. Food was actually pretty decent for a resort but still not something you would seek out at an American restaurant. Majority of staff had scowls instead of smiles. I would definitely look elsewhere and won't be returning to Dominican.
