Man what a nostalgia bomb this thread is… I was a 90s kid with parents on a budget but I didn’t know the difference. A trip to Astroworld and a game in the dome was like seeing the world to me lol. I can picture that place like it was yesterday. Makes me sad that it’s not there.

Pretty much the same here. Parents were divorced and my mom was a teacher. She still managed to give me a trip here every summer and being an only child she let me bring one of my friends.

Such good times at that place. Thanks OP for starting it and helping to recollect such great memories with my mom.

A lot. Went there a lot on family vacations as a kid, and later on high school band trips. My now-husband and I had our first real date there during Fright Nights back in ‘97.

I was sad when it went away like the Astrodome’s light board (I can still hear the fans yelling “Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz” for Jose Cruz). 80’s/ 90’s Houston was cool; don’t know why y’all felt the need to mess it up.

(Edit: First date there was ‘97, not ‘99.)

AstroWorld by day, and nothing more glorious than seeing this by night...

Remember the siren that would sound just before it dropped riders and then the screams you would here following the siren sound? Great times.

The Astrodome was the first professional arena I had seen. Used to go at the end of Dixie season. I was blown away when I walked inside the first time. Saw Hank Aaron my first time there.

Yep. some people use to put a quarter on their lap and when it would drop the quarter would hover in the air right in front of you on the way down.

I went there a few times in the 90’s with our youth group from the church and loved it. I think they had a Batman roller coaster, the first and only roller coaster I’ve been on.

Loved them as a kid. Couldn’t imagine how disgusting and ghetto they would be in present Houston.

Couldn't agree more- Since moving to Houston in the 80's have watched the city start to desintegrate, typical of any liberal Democrat controlled city of the times...

I never could sleep the night before Astroworld. We usually stayed at the hotel across the street.
I remember asking my Dad what time it was, because I couldn’t sleep. He say something like “the same time it was 5 minutes ago just add 5 minutes”
I love that Man.

I thought I was the only oddball that did that. So many church youth group trips, as a young'un it was comparable to the excitement of Christmas morning.

As a little kid we got to preview Astroworld before it officially opened. Drove in from Louisiana. I remember being pissed because there wasn't an Astros game that day and I wanted to see the Astrodome (couldn't have known as an adult I would see it 100 times).

I really really miss the Astros being in the NL
An Astros fan since the 60s. It was bad enough when they moved to the Juice Box, but I can't even watch the games anymore now that they're in the AL. Completely different brand of baseball from what I grew up with in the Astrodome.

When I was about 5, I went to see a baseball game at the Astrodome for the first time with my family. I was so amazed by it. It seemed massive to me with these multi-tiered seating and giant glass roof. It was an experience that I remember vividly and my first major league baseball game. I was certain that it could never be topped.

This is the exact same memory I have, I was also 5 in '75 when I made my first trip. Driving up to the lighted Dome at night and walking up the stairs in anticipation was incredible. I can still feel it today. But when I got onto the concourse and could see the colored seats and the field, absolutely overwhelming. The old rainbow unis and orange hats are ingrained in my mind. Nothing was ever that beautiful to a little 5 year old kid. And the scoreboard, what can you say ! Long live the Astrodome

***back to Astroworld -- Does anyone remember the Mexican Restaurant next to the River of No Return ? It's the first place we got to eat at in Astroworld . Guess we had a little more money in late 70's-early 80's. It reminded me of Pancho's

I started booking later flights because of this. I'd get maybe 3 hours sleep. Now I get something closer to normal because my body gives up around 3am.
