quote:

If you want to build a fortune, you may want to consider Houston, Texas — Bankrate recently ranked it as the best big US city for accumulating wealth.

With its thriving economy and abundance of Fortune 500 companies, it's no surprise Houston secured the top spot.

Sample:

Houston is home to more Fortune 500 company headquarters than anywhere in America except for New York and Chicago.

Your paycheck goes farther in Houston than most other major cities.

Housing is more affordable in Houston. The city didn't experience a housing bubble the way the rest of the country did.

Houston residents are able to keep more of their income thanks to a lack of income tax.

It's been one of the fastest growing US cities for years, and isn't slowing down — Houston will soon become the third largest city in America.

InB4 the 'I hate Houston' people that don't actually live there but reside in suburbs and made the shitty, idiotic decision to commute in everyday.

Sure, and you can also add 3 hours to your work day for the commute.

No income taxes in Nashville either.

And its the hub of healthcare.

And tons of growth.

And no crime.

Please don't move here though.

And your housing is not "affordable". I live in the burbs (The Woodlands), and I love it. My commute isn't that far though. Still don't think it would bother me. I'm not paying $500k to live in some 2 bedroom house in the heights with jacked up streets and crappy surrounding neighborhoods just because the bar scene is cool. I'm getting too old for that.

This is true to an extent.

Historically, Houston was known as a city that you could make a killing in and live relatively inexpensively. In recent years, this has not become the case, though. You can still make a killing, but unless you want to live in the suburbs, you have to pay a prime price.

Yeah, your money doesn't go nearly as far as it once did in Houston.

Housing prices here in Houston are fricking outrageous.

We're considering moving there for the reasons mentioned.

My wife can get a 50% raise there, we can live well inside the loop, etc.

While I love New Orleans, the wages don't match the expenses of housing and education.

Houston is a soulless shite of a city made of concrete built as a monument to corporate greed and a complete lack of anything in life but 24/7 work for anyone.

This statement is stupid on many different levels.

Maybe you're right, but it offers more than any single city in Louisiana.
