Tell people all the time... Houston is a great city to live in. Not a great destination city to visit.

I live in midtown and don't deal with any traffic.

6 minute commute to work. 17 walking.

Pretty nice lifestyle. We're looking at a move to ny, but I like my job right now

its been almost 20 years, but lets see, I lived:

- Wirt Rd (telegraph hill apartments..they were bad then so i cant imagine now)

- moved to some apartments right behind the old houston post (probably not there anymore)

- then moved to some french/NOLA sounding aparments right near the galleria (cant remember the name of them)

- finally moved into a house in bellaire with 5 roomates.

so i never had too bad of a commute. i worked next to the STOR (then IKEA later on) off I10

i had friends who lived off Redan in the heights so i spent a good amount of time there.

Why are people fighting about real estate prices? With price of oil, those numbers will go down hopefully along with that shitty city.

There definitely should be a significant drop in real estate prices

One would think so, but the housing market has only seen a slow down in sales and construction, not a shrinking in prices. And the slowdown in construction is pretty minimal. Commercial real estate is continuing to blow and go

If oil prices stay low residential WILL drop soon, commercial may take a bit longer but it will drop as well. If oil stays under $50 a barrel average for the next 5+ years it will get really ugly.

People that were laid off will let their savings dwindle down and then pack their shite and get out. Consider them lucky for leaving H town, even if it is just with the clothes on their backs.

Enough to cause a significant drop in residential real estate prices if oil averages under $50 a barrel for a few years

It won't be like the 80s. Houston is far more diverse than that. But you're right, it won't be good for Houston or, frankly, the US. That said, the oil market is doing OK right now as companies consolidate and look for cost saving measures. Some areas are actually growing (e.g. pipe companies). But sustained low oil prices will eventually hit and hit hard.

didnt peak oil already happen???

shouldnt we be paying $200+ per barrel now?

i seen it! bangladesh was supposed to be 6 feet under water by now from global warming and oil prices were going to render the US auto fleet inoperable.

It didn't include any info on how many loops are in Nashville, so obviously it deserved the anchor.

O&G mining is just over 10% of Houston's GDP. Which is significantly less than what it was when Houston crashed in the 80's. That will still hurt the Houston economy, but not near as bad as everyone seems to think.

People don't realize how diversified the economy in Houston has become since the crash in the 80's. shite, five of the largest employers in Houston are medical and with baby boomers and the increase of foreigners traveling for healthcare, that industry (at least in Houston) is not going to slow down.

Notice I said HOUSTON. Not Spring or Clear Lake or Champions or Pearland or Sugarland or Katy.

I knew what I was getting into moving into my current neighborhood and what it's gonna cost me to stay here. I'm cool with it, for now. But it doesn't change the fact that rent is too damn high.
