So, will we be revisiting this same saga this time next year?

Yup. Though next year we may do a two year extension because of a different cap and negotiating situation.

His 2017 cap number is not real when we are postponing cap hits into fake years beyond 17 as him doing us a favor

I take it you mean legit/kosher/etc., not real.

The 2017 number is very real, but yeah it would be unfair for the Saints to use that number to tag him, which is why I originally thought it was a huge advantage for the Saints.

But now we're going in circles. I thought Saints could tag him cheap, Brees and agent aren't stupid, word came out no tag clause.

Spotrac I don't know if this has been posted but $18 million in dead money in 2018

Jesus. That is not what I expected them to do. I mean, it's what I expected them to EVENTUALLY do (push a shitload of dead cap into the post Brees retirement era), but it's a few years sooner than I thought.

The Saints are out of useful players to extend next season (Brees and Unger are taken care of). Jenkins, Lelito, Fairley, and Kruger are the biggest names.

Looking at Brees's contract structure, I think they told Brees that they would go all out in 2017 FA and hit the reset button in 2018, allowing him to get a nice contract elsewhere.

The contract kicks the can WAY more than I thought it would beyond 2017, so I don't expect Brees to retire a Saint unless we go deep in the playoffs/win a SB within the next 2 seasons.

overthecap stuff

If the contract voids and Brees is not extended the Saints will carry a dead money charge of $18 million in 2019 for Brees.

Well here is exactly what you asked for before Chad.

Not sure why it's $18 mil in 2019 instead of 2018, but if he is extended it doesn't accelerate.

The same will happen with Fairley if we can extend him also.

But I do need to go look into the details on Brees more. $30 mil signing bonus which comes out to $6 mil per year.

Edit:
Looking at both spotrac and overthecap it seems the 2019 was a typo and 2018 will be the $18 mil hit if he isn't extended.

If he is extended we won't be hit for $18 mil.

If he is not extended then that $18 mil won't hit us too hard since we wouldn't also be paying for a premium QB.

But I am curious why the acceleration is delayed a year (unless they just typed it wrong).

Edit:
As I said in the other post it looks like they did type the wrong year and 2018 would be the hit).

Cao hit next year is only $19 mil, and we have a projected $20ish mil in space (likely to be more) with Kruger and Fairley as the only "big" FAs.

We also have about $10 mil to carry over, but at least a couple of mil will be eaten into throughout the season.

So we should have at least $25 mil (maybe closer to $30 mil) in space next year BEFORE any cuts and conversions and such.

Converting Armstead's roster bonus will save us another $4 mil for instance.

In short, we'll be fine and have plenty of money for FA next year and won't be dead money screwed in 2018 if Brees gets extended again. :p

good stuff bone. I ain't worry about 18 mill cap hit, i mean if we draft a rookie, our qb savings will come from that alone.

question cause this is confusing:

if we extend drew, does his 6 mill per year get added to whatever else we extend him for cap hit?

and really, 2018 is only an additional 12 million hit if not extended cause we'd be guaranteed to have a 6 mill hit regardless.

True $6 mil is on the books regardless for 2018, so only an additional $12 hits if not extended.

And yeah that $6 mil per year stays if extended (anything new is added on top) because that $6 mil per is money already paid.

And yeah IF we draft a good rookie then we'll save a shite ton anyway, but easier said than done.

There's 3 scenarios:

We let Brees go after 2017 and take the $18 mil hit in 2018.

We extend Brees and add his new contract on top of the $6 mil per from 2018-2020. We can add one more dummy year again (since the max for bonus spreading is 5 and next year he'll have 4 years left) to spread the hit a tiny bit more.

And this is the worst case scenario. If Brees hits FA we'll be hit for $18 mil in 2018, and if we resign him after hitting FA his new contract will add on to that $18 mil.

So the only two real choices is extend him before he hits FA or let him walk. That means no bidding war in FA because if he hits that he's gone.
