So do we just expect Drew to do "1 year extensions" like this for the rest of his career?

I'm really happy that a deal got done, but why do the Saints always wait to the end of the offseason to get these deals done.

Thanks, Brees. Never understood the haters.

$44/5 = $8.8 per year so if they don't resign him after 2 years that's $27 million in dead money? I'm no NFL cap expert at all but I believe that's how it works.

My best guess is that, with $12.75m being feed up, he got a $16m signing bonus spread out over the 5 total seasons (with 1/5th, or $3.2m, counting towards this year's cap).

1/5th of that signing bonus will also count against the 2017 cap. So when he finishes the 2017 season, 3/5ths of that $16m signing bonus ($9.6m) will accelerate onto the 2018 season's cap.

You of all people to ask. You definitely voiced some strife over him.

I just never understood why Brees of all players is the one constantly bashed and held responsible for the poor play. As if his contract is what is hindering the Saints.. Meanwhile the Saints release yet another wasted early round draft pick.. but people like you love to bitch over his contract and make the state of the team his fault.. when he's one of the few to consistently pull his weight and make the team even remotely competitive.

By all means let's let Brees walk so we can draft more Graysons and have more dead money signings such as Galette

quote:

The Saints will have a $12.1 million dead-money charge for Galette, making him the third-highest paid player on a team he isn't even playing for.

quote:

Last year Grantland broke down the problematic trend for the Saints, who are paying large amounts to departed players like Jimmy Graham, Ben Grubbs and Curtis Lofton.

Mmm hmmm..

Your ignorant dumb-arse made it all about how Saints fans were just supporting Brees. No, we are in support of what's best for the Saints.. and that is the guy who is playing the most consistent ball on the team.. and not exactly trusting this front office outside of him. It's funny, even when Brees has what is perceived to be a down year.. he is still among top 2 in completion percentage and yards.. and around top 5 in TDs.

It's quite a blessing to have such quarterback leading your franchise. It's about the Saints. Not just a loyalty to the Saints.

Even when the Saints appear to make a decent first round pick, seems like bad stuff happens.. such as the broken leg of Rankins now costing him to sit more time. Unfortunate situation.. but at least Brees has proven consistency and played at an elite level through injury.

That is a lie. I voiced strife over sigining him for 4 years at 100 million.

Drew Brees is a great human being once again and a great team player for New Orleans.

I was starting to have seeds of doubts about him with the reports about the insane deals but those are gone now.

Thank god.

Looking forward to watching Drew retire as not just a Saints Legend but an NFL Legend period.

So glad he is signed and it seems a good deal for all sides.

So sad LSU lost. So sad in so many different ways.

So it goes.

I guess we will be back to this after next year.

Maybe, but it's better than 4 years and like $60mil guaranteed.

All the "Brees is so selfish" posters, and there are lots of them, should feel real dumb right about now.

Is the two year opt out up to the Saints or Brees?

Seems to be a great deal for both parties. I'm glad that Drew was willing to meet the organization half way and help with the cap.

Why only 1 year added? This was basically a punt that helped both sides. Brees gets more guaranteed money to lessen the injury risk and the team gets the option to realistically use the tag after 2017 when it won't be $43 mil.

How can you use the tag if the contract is terminated?

So realistically I'd think he would at least have 3 good years left. If he plays well through 17 season and saints want him back, what would cap hit be there? Or we'd just redo contract again but have his rights?
