Drew Brees extension will be 5 years but automatically voids to two. Committed to Saints this year and next only for $44.25M guaranteed
Ah, the exact numbers I predicted.

So what would the dead money number be next year if he falls off a cliff and we decide to cut bait after next year?

What guards are making $12 million?

i know what he was referring to, but its not like there were people saying "oh Drew is going to sign a 1 year deal to help the team". Cant make people eat crow on that, when everyone assumed he was getting at least 4 years. Which, let's face it, would be detrimental to the team

The "Drew Brees is greedy and doesn't care about winning" criticism didn't just start with this contract negotiation. It has been said for the past 5 years by the same cast of characters. "Why can't Drew be more like Brady and Manning and take less money for a team friendly deal?" Yes, this directly refutes that.

And yes I can when those people were slamming him for always being greedy and predicting that he wanted much more than just 4 years. There's a different between 4 years and some people saying that he wanted to completely hamstring the team.

I wanted the 4 year deal for the same reason this one is 4 extra years. I just didn't know it was on the table.

I'm one of the biggest Brees knights here, and I'm floored that he agreed to a 1 year extension for that price.

Do we know what the signing bonus is? All I've seen so far is that only $44 million is guaranteed.

Check overthecap. They go into a lot of detail.

I know if it voids it all hits that first year (unless it's team option for it not too but I don't believe so).

And for the other thing I forgot to touch on, lowering his hit this year isn't a bad thing (though not necessarily a good thing in itself).

It does allow us to make a trade for a big money player, but we likely just roll it all into next year's cap.

I think I read that his cap hit this year is $17.5m. So that would mean his base for 2016 is $2.5 million. Edit: That is actually wrong, as the cap hit would include the signing bonus.

So that is going to be $17.5m right there in "signing bonus" money. I wouldn't be surprised is most of the rest is in it too. If not, it be a roster bonus that would be converted into a signing bonus so the same thing
