Can we get a cap breakdown and how much space this gives us presently?

huge risk by Brees. Thank you kind sir.

I agree. I'm going to start eating Jimmy John's to make up the difference.

Looks like they may have prorated a shitload of money into years that he might not be playing. They supposedly free up space this year, so they better carry all of it into 17.

Why the hell did they touch this year's money? Seems like a slam dunk way to pay him 30 mil up front and lower next year's payout. Especially dumb to me because if they were going to do that, why the hell wait til damn near week 1 of the season when FA is long gone?

Great deal for Saints and it helps them put some more pieces around Brees.
Brees late in his career is better than anything else out there.
Look at the Rams and Goff who is inactive week 1 as the top pick in the draft.
The Gallette deal is the one killing the Saints right now.

Drew Brees' new deal is 5 years w/ automatic void to 2 years, per @Edwerderespn. Pays $20M salary this season, $24.25M next season, all gtd.

If this is the case, then the deal voiding ISN'T being used to spread out a signing bonus, which is good.

So its essentially a one year extension? Wtf? That's kind of odd.

I guess we will be back to this after next year.

I'm reading it as 2 years after 2016

It also takes the franchise tag off the table

Edit: nope, I'm wrong

Yeah I don't know why either. I definitely would have tried to structure it where the bigger hit is this year.

Why would you want to do that though? We were already set to take that hit this year. Why push out another 10 mil when you could've already paid it? Especially when it literally helps you none this year and you're only paying out more in the future?

That was just very stupid on our part and dont understand the reasoning whatsoever.

Unused salary cap can be rolled to the next year. We now have flexibility to trade for an offensive lineman.

Any extra space rolls over though. Still odd

Yes it is. He is probably using a bad term as the only way to reduce the cap hit is to either reduce the salary or convert it to a bonus. Whatever they converted to a bonus will spread over 5 years. However, 60% of the prorated bonus will hit the cap in year 3 as dead money when the deal voids.

I thought the Saints were going to be idiots to sign him to anything past 1 year. They might finally be pulling their heads out their asses. In fact, I'm all for trading him.

I am pretty dumb at this. Is this something like Tom Brady does with new england. Will we basically sign him to a 1yr extension every other year to lower the cap hit?
