I don't think he was making 30 million. I believe that was just his cap hit.

@Edwerderespn: Drew Brees extension will be 5 years but automatically voids to two. Committed to Saints this year and next only for $44.25M guaranteed
I need an explanation on this "automatically voids" talk.

His cap number is now 17.25 million. His deal isn't the problem with this roster.

Brees: Cap situation was most important element to him. Wants team to keep and acquire talent over next few years.

no doubt the Brady's of the world have rubbed off of him.

but it sounds like he wants to still be here past 2017

Kind of late in the offseason for this year. Probably would have helped back in March.

means we will be paying for Drew for years 3, 4 and 5 (if he isn't here), or we will again be restructuring after next year.

Mickey Loomis is king of the dead money.

So just to explain some things I see people confused on:

The contract is written so it auto voids at some point after the 2017 season (or during the season but leaving 2017 intact).

It doesn't really spread the hit since money in future years accelerates to the first voided year, UNLESS he signs another extension and then I believe that money stays in the future years.

Why only 1 year added? This was basically a punt that helped both sides. Brees gets more guaranteed money to lessen the injury risk and the team gets the option to realistically use the tag after 2017 when it won't be $43 mil.

That allows both sides to negotiate in good faith on fair value, instead of Drew's agent letting the Saints pick between an insane tag price or open market negotiating.

This was super nice by Drew doing this (though he does get more security too so it wasn't all generous) because it allows us to be put it a much better negotiating position in the future.

Is this a precursor to another move?? Obviously he was priority, but this frees up serious space....Could we be looking to make a trade?? Talib??

Maybe wishful thinking on my part....

so what you're saying if drew doesn't extend, all dead money goes to 2018, if he does extend it can be spread amongst the 2018-2020 years? You got a link to this shite cause i don't like taking your word for things.
