How is that true?

Because it's the higher number of either the average of the top 5 or 10 paid QBs(depending on the tag) or 144% of his previous cap hit (this being his third tag).

I doubt his cap number next year will be more than $25 mil(likely a good bit less; say $20 mil x 144%, or roughly $29 mil, $14 mil less) so it would be less than the $43 mil it would have been ($30 mil x 144%).

But if it has a no tag clause as Chad said then that is a huge game changer and not quite as generous (and much less "stupid") then I thought on his part.

Still a great deal for all parties but nowhere near as much of a win for the Saints.

How can you use the tag if the contract is terminated?

How can you use a tag when a player's contract expires normally?

You have his rights until a certain day and decide if you will tag them before then.

Edit:
In other words the contracts for the just completed season are still valid before the FA period opens (so his 2017 contract is still in effect until 2018 FA opens). Since you still have his rights to that point you can choose to franchise him

Hmmm, but from my understanding, it is terminating, not expiring.

Can you tag a player you cut?

@Profootablltalk Drew Brees deal done. $44.25M fully guaranteed over two. No trade clause. No franchise tag clause.

I edited to explain better, but basically his 2017 contract is still in effect until 2018 FA starts. You apply tags before then.

If you cut or waive a player though you are giving up their rights.

Yup so all the talk about the tag is moot anyway.

The contract is written so it auto voids at some point after the 2017 season (or during the season but leaving 2017 intact).

It doesn't really spread the hit since money in future years accelerates to the first voided year, UNLESS he signs another extension and then I believe that money stays in the future years.

Well it spreads it out, or pushes it until the 2018 season, right? Meaning that it's spread out over the 5 years, and then will accelerate to 2018 if his contract terminates

So we get relief in 2016 and 2017, then it accelerates to 2018

Correct, and depending on structure it may only be about $10ish mil in dead money in 2018.

Also the reason why 5 years is so the signing bonus is spread over the max years allowed so 2016 and 2017 is smaller.

If the signing bonus was, for example, $15 mil that would be $3 mil per over 5 vs. $7.5 mil over 2.

So we'd only pay $6 mil of the bonus while he was here ($3 mil per) and $9 mil after the contract voids (all in 2018).

No complaints from me. I just thought it was much more in the Saints favor but should have known better.

Saints favor is seeing how drew ages before they sink tens of millions into future guarantees beyond next year for a 39 year old qb behind a mediocre to below average line. Saints have no problem giving market value when warranted, this allows a wait and see approach without insulting drew

I meant with the tag, not anything else. I thought they were just handing them the option of using a much cheaper tag (which would have given the Saints a huge advantage in negotiations), but I should have known better that Brees and his agent aren't that stupid.

We could legit carry him for $30 mil for a year so a tag at that price would allow us to say frick it you're riding the tag at 39.

Well that would be stupid for us to tag him and have a fake cap number being used as the multiplier for his tag salary

I'm glad someone gets this extension ! This allows us to build a better roster to make a push but also gives drew to move on as well !

Well no if you want to sign him to a long term contract but I don't think most Saint fans want to JMO.
One to two years guaranteed at a time is fine I think.

What do you mean fake cap number? It would be based on his 2017 cap number which is very real.
