Unused salary cap can be rolled to the next year. We now have flexibility to trade for an offensive lineman.

And the reason they don't have money has nothing to do with his pay. Most teams in the league are paying 20 million for a QB. They just are better at drafting and free agency than the Saints. And they don't lead the league in dead money, like the Saints.

Most teams are NOT paying 20 mil for a QB, either

did you think Brees would sign just a 1 yr extension? did anyone predict this?

So just go ahead and bash the man first right?

Same guy who has been as consistent an elite player as there is without missing any time (1 game) and played through injury at a very competitive level.

A guy who actually has earned his going rate unlike SEVERAL other qbs in the league and people continue to bash over his contract.. and hold him sole responsible for the Saints being in the state they are.. and not the front office who has shown time and time again they suck in the draft and often free agency..

Good for Brees. It's not his fault the Saints have had shitty draft picks and other horrible signings. He justified his pay.

Again, even if true, we waited this long? Trades into the regular season never work out.

I thought the Saints were going to be idiots to sign him to anything past 1 year. They might finally be pulling their heads out their asses. In fact, I'm all for trading him.

he has a no trade clause.

and dont get it twisted, this has Drew Brees hands all over it. It's not really the Saints "pulling their heads out of their arse".

He's more so referring to the people who criticize Brees as being greedy and preventing the saints from building a good team because he is paid too much... despite the fact that his salary has been comparable to all other starting qb's in the league. And now he seems to have an incredibly team friendly and risky deal which further flies in the face of those who say that Brees doesn't care about winning. Their position was never based in reality though, so there's no way they eat crow as said.

I'm worried they're going to suck the next two years and be left with jack shite. They need help on both sides the ball immediate and long term.

Loomis is shite, but 2-3 extra high draft picks would be amazing.

@Edwerderespn: According to source, Drew Brees cap number with extension reduced from NFL-record $30M to $17.25M.

Yup.

And I definitely expected a longer deal. I'm happy.

Damn. That's a lot of space to free up.

How much of that can be rolled over to next season, and what are we looking like next year?

No one is saying he hasnt earned his money.

people commenting negatively the last week were afraid of signing him to 4 or 5 years for a lot of money, while he pushes 40 years old. That could have been a disaster given the past history of this team & contracts given for "rewarding" players.

to just get him for 1 year is awesome. You can reassess after 2017. If we can gain some steam, you can resign him. If not, and we are still rebuilding, you let him walk.

the doom and gloom attitude was potentially being stuck with him for 4 or 5 years at $25 mil per year at an age when QBs die.

i know what he was referring to, but its not like there were people saying "oh Drew is going to sign a 1 year deal to help the team". Cant make people eat crow on that, when everyone assumed he was getting at least 4 years. Which, let's face it, would be detrimental to the team.

It seems like he basically took a 1 year $15 million extension. He was going to make $30 million this year but now he'll make $44 million over 2 years. Fantastic deal. No idea how people can be upset about any of this.

I really do love that Drew didn't break the bank, but I too am wondering why it took all offseason to come up with a deal like this. The extra cap space would have been helpful in March. My only other concern is that we're going to be in the same boat him with next offseason.

Yes, but did we just back load it again? I was actually looking forward to clearing the cap deck this year.

That 12.75M would have been awesome to have months ago. Not sure what good it does for this year, except gives us a chance to roll it to next year.
