That's something to be celebrated in the context of a legendary sportsman? Is that what society has come to?

He has been a true professional and a model for kids everywhere, so let him be honored.

define "true professional" in relation to so many others who are eventual HOF'ers and didn't get this suckfest.

you mean the year he led the league in hits, hit .316 with a .362 OBP, and slugged .429 for a .791 OPS....

How have his numbers been since coming back? I'll hang up and listen.

This trendy Jeter backlash is lame. Dude was a stud for 15 years and we didn't hear this griping about boring arse Cal Ripken - he of zero titles.

I wonder how Craig Biggio or Paul Molitor would be remembered if they played in New York with the greatest assemblage of talent this side of Billy Martin's Yankees or Dick Williams' A's.

You mean his 1 season since coming back? You mean this season, his only full season since coming back. That of being a 40 year old SS in his 20th season in MLB

I would normally be the first to agree but I can't. First my favorite team is whomever the Yankees are playing. I hate those SOBs. I hate the organization and their belief/ability to buy championships. I hate their classless fans. However I do love the game. I don't know his stats like I once did but the guy has always seemed to be the consummate professional in a city that is the hardest in sports to play in. The guy has lasted a LONG time in a city that quits on players with a 3 game slump. He has been the captain and fulfilled the role fantastic. So not only on his accomplishments, but also on the way he has conducted himself- I will say that the send off is well deserved.

I think the big allure to Jeter is that in a time of steroids on top of steroids, he kept his nose clean and collected 3,000+ hits while not being all jacked up.

How sure are we about this? I've always been pretty amazed his 2012 season, at 38 years old, hasn't at least brought this question forward.

Life's not fair - can't blame the Captain for this. If Rickey Jackson had been a Giant and LT a Saint their legacies may be reversed as well.

Same as we should be questioning Biggio, Chipper, Ripken, and any player who played during the 90's

he's the best case for people saying he's overrated so much to the point he's underrated.

Exactly, which is why I think the "Farewell Tour" is ridiculous and the backlash is not overblown or inappropriate. If the difference between the three mentioned here is negligible, then what are we celebrating? That he was really, really, really popular and he did it in New York City?

I'm not saying Jeter isn't great, because obviously he is. But why are we celebrating the fact that he won baseball's version of the genetic lottery?

The really offensive thing about Jeter's farewell tour is that he gets to be the Greek God of Baseball and the other great hitters of the last 20 years are footnotes.
