Joe D and Mantle had enough class to hang it up before they came out and stunk it up to hell and those two guys were legendary douches IRL. Those 2 dicks outclass Jeter in that regard and it isn't even close. He's obviously a vainglorious douche.

Again - nobody said this about Ripken or Jerry Rice or Deoin Sanders or Michael Jordan.

On tonight's show the monologue focuses on Jeter's relative overratedness not only in all of baseball, but in the position of SS and the Yankees organization.

LINK

I think he's spot on. While Jeter is a great player and hall of famer, has he really transcended all of sport to the point that he gets this unprecedented and sustained amount of "pats on the arse"?

It's because he plays for the Yankees (and has for his whole career). He's a great player, but a player with his career in another uniform wouldnt get the royal treatment, Ia gree.

So the attention monger calls out someone actually worthy of the attention pouring down on them? Classic.

Lulz. Yes they did, but the victory lap Jeter came back for is pathetic.

I'm starting to get the vibe that the only people who are still harping that baseball is dying are the ones without a big club close by

this is really only relevant to ESPN. Fox has the majority of the sub-stations that carry all the games. And they're raking in the dough due to local viewership. Which then benefits the teams. Like the Rangers new TV deal which begins next April, and is somewhere in the area of 1 Billion $$$

Joe D and Mantle

Joe D retired at 36 after hitting .263/.365/.422 well below his career norms of .325/.398/.579

Mickey Mantle retired at 36 after hitting .237/.385/.398 well below his career norms of .298/.421/.557

so would you like to try again?

The dude is a Yankee, just let it be. He is the most likable person there is. Played the game the right way, gave respect to the game and kept his nose clean. He is wholesome and seems to be an overall good guy. Not too many people in any sport can say the same. The fact that he banged half of the chicks on the fappening is just a side note.

None of us know Jeter. We know his carefully-crafted persona.

Everybody loved Jordan and we all wanted to "be like Mike," and now we're only scratching the surface of discovering how much of a dick he really was.

No those stories were out when he was playing, just no one cared....

So what you are saying is that they are all 3 douche bags IRL that hung on too long at the expense of their teammates. Nice work tduecen.

No I am saying you are wrong in your previous argument... Of course we can go down the list and see several Hall of Fame players they played their last season below their career norms.

How about we find out which one out of the three: Joe D, Mickey Mantle and Jeter announced their retirement before they played to those below career average numbers, so that they would be given a final season victory lap?

Same as we should be questioning Biggio, Chipper, Ripken, and any player who played during the 90's

Well for one, people seem generally inclined to question players of the 90's already, so I'm not sure what your point is.

Secondly, none of the players you mentioned had near the season jeter had at that age. Ripken was closest but he only played in half as many games. The fact that jeter played 159 games at that level at 38 years old seems like it would raise some questions to me.

Considering Joe D and Mickey Mantle didn't have the internet, TV coverage, and larger media to deal with that would be irrelevant.... Like asking Trout if today's game is better than the one Ruth played

Since that's what baseball does, I would say it's relevant. Being vain is being vain whether it was done in the 1950s or the 2010s just because there are different media that disseminate the vanity.
