U don't see that level of ridiculousness in any other sport when a good player retires
NBA has done it for quite some time now.

I'm so tired of this line. Would literally any star NY athlete get half of the love if they had played in KC?
no
but that's a large part of his "legendary" status, correct?

The Yankees are the Yankees and that's just it. Jeter came in and helped start a dynasty for the most recognizable franchise in all of sports. He had intangibles that couldn't be measured. He played the game the right way. Though it is true that things would be different if he played somewhere else, that is still not debatable because he didn't. He played in N.Y. and that is what we have to go by.

While Jeter is a great player and hall of famer, has he really transcended all of sport to the point that he gets this unprecedented and sustained amount of "pats on the arse"?
I never really cared for Jeter as a fan, but yeah he deserves this.

POINT ONE: Jeter is staggeringly overrated. His Gold Gloves are a sham, and for all of the talk about his leadership, the Yankees stopped winning titles once Bernie Williams retired. Jeter also refused to put the team first and move over to third when they signed A-Rod. He's never won an MVP.
POINT TWO: He's still a no doubt about Hall of Famer. He's one of the top ten shortstops of all-time (I'd compare him to Alan Trammell, who is staggeringly UNDER-rated and should be in the Hall). He's made some of the most iconic plays of recent baseball history, and he is the face of the most famous baseball team, and has been for over a decade.
POINT THREE: The Yankees are, at best, mediocre. They might even stink. They aren't going to the postseason, nor are they particularly close. So what's the big deal? Let the famous guy take a curtain call, everyone sells some extra tickets, and it's not like it's costing the Yankees the postseason. Nor is Stephen Drew exactly making a compelling case he should be playing in Jeter's place. I've got no problem with Jeter's retirement tour. It would feel different if they were in a pennant race, but they aren't. It makes people feel good, the teams make some extra money, and a Hall of Famer gets to bask in the glow of adulation one last time...
Who is it hurting? People need to lighten up. And are we so addicted to being mean and hateful that we can't be nice to a worthy competitor who is taking a final bow? Hell, I think more players should get this treatment, not less. We should appreciate things.
I've never rooted for Jeter, and I've certainly never cheered for him. But geez, I can give him some polite applause for his last trip to my town. It's acknowledging a worthy rival. Enjoy life more, people. Sports are supposed to be fun.

Jeter has a higher career OPS then RIpken.
No Power!!!@@@
To understand Jeter's greatness, you just need to listen to other players talk about him.
Also you must realize that anything the Yankees do, turns into a MLB thing because of the market size and popularity.. Should a team not send off a player who was their captain, won world series rings, and played in the same city for 20 years?

He also played in a much higher run scoring environment. This is like pointing out a pitcher who had a lower ERA during the 60s. Sure, it's true, but it's not that meaningful -- context matters.

Jeter is like 30th all-time in doubles.
And you can say that's just because he's played forever, but I'm pretty sure most people in the top 50 on the all-time doubles list played for a long time.
ETA: I know you're not shitting on him.
