Most of the replies I've read so far must be people who have no idea what a scramble is
Who cares if I couldn't break 95 in those conditions playing a round? Give me 2 cracks at every shot and I'm gonna shave a lot of strokes

Yes. You could give me 4 shots per stroke and I wouldn't break 80 in any round.

I couldn't, but seems like just being able to putt twice would be a huge advantage.

Good thing there is its hard to hit drives OB....but it's easy to 4 putt for hackers.

I played college golf at University or Arizona, played professionally for a while, played in a U.S. Amatuer...
Give me two swings every time around any course and I'm breaking par more often than not. I would be nervous sure... But I get two swings and two putts every time. I think I would be in the hunt on sunday

I'm pretty sure that you are missing the point... so I'll spell it out for you.
He is trying to give a difficulty reference for the schmo's that sit at home and watch Augusta (like you, me, your club pro). Scratch at your local municipal doesn't even begin to come close to the setups that these guys play.
So... your +1/+2 semi-pro club pros.. and your 10 handicaps.... those are exactly the guys he's talking about.
Is it an exaggeration? probably.
Is it really that far from the truth? probably not.
Everyone tends to underestimate how hard these courses are. I'll take the word of a guy with a green jacket over some bro on a message board, no offense.

Your 4 putt comment prompted me to reply after enjoying the comments in this thread.
As this thread relates to me, probably a lifetime 10 hdcp (low 7), who presently carries a 12, I think I would easily break 85 at Augusta under the terms given by the OP.
I've walked the course before, played its sister course, Palmetto in Aiken, on the Monday of the tournament. There were actually some pros getting ready for the tournament and avoiding the crowds when we played. I shot 92 w 3 FOUR putts. No gimmes on those greens and a stimpmeter doesn't do them justice. So, yes, most probably can't imagine how difficult the speed is.
But, Augusta is not known for its rough. If you had posed this question in regards to a U.S. Open, then I couldn't be so sure. I've never played it, but I know it well from simulation. My first round at the Old Course I shot 79. I literally knew the name of every bunker and break in the greens from computer games.
I have no doubt that the scratch golfers in this thread could drink like John Daly and be on the leaderboard come Sunday. I've had a good round on a decent course used for amateur championships in the low 80s, while a +7 playing partner set a course record w a 57. Every club has guys that good. The only difference is putting and pressure, which becomes much less of a factor for a guy that good w 2 shots.

I would compare the greens at Augusta to the ones at LA tour. Most on this board that have played there can't break 90.

So.... YOUR pro made the cut at the US open... didn't realize he was representative of MOST of the club pros. Glad you clarified that. I was so worried that your club pro was the only bad one.
