Ancora has my favorite pizza in the city, plus that dessert with the cherry/pistachio bread and mascarpone is out of this world. Haven't been to Dolce Vita yet, though... but I guess that discussion is for another thread.

Nobody's mentioned Impastato's. Isn't that a pretty well respected restaurant?

FUHGEDDABOUDIT

ACTUALLY it's the best off the Veteran's corridor. I think Bravo has the best chain Italian, consistent but just ok.
I like Fausto's but mainly because they do good Italian and Seafood dished there, like Aldolfo's.

Further down vets is Sandro's and it has to be the least talked about of the well made Italian restaurants.

Then Vet's ends close to the mediocre Brick Oven cafe. (not same as the Austin place) I used to like Brick Oven.

I think Impastato's is the best of the Veteran's BLVD choices.

No mention of Italian Barrel is the real travesty. I have sent numerous people there and no one has left disappointed.
There are a lot of pretty good places in New Orleans but we lack top notch Italian

Have you tried Da Piero?

I rarely crave Italian when I want to go out for a really nice (more than 50 each for dinner), it's always been more a comfort food to me.
Haven't tried Mariza yet or Italian Barrel.

I get upset when I realize I will never get to try every restaurant.

My one meal at Giovanni's was laughably bad. This was 5-6 years ago, but everything was so baroque, form the flavors to the plating. Couple that with two tenors belting opera 8 feet away and it is a place that anyone can afford to miss.

I must be ordering the right things and y'all must be ordering poorly.

The opera singers didn't bother me any of the times I was there, but they moved around a good bit and then stayed in the back part of the room for a lot of the time. I only really noticed them when one made a pass near the table during a tune.

Never understood the appeal of this. I wouldn't go to a place for that reason alone.

If I want to listen to opera, I will go to an opera house. If I want Italian, I will go elsewhere.

I didnt even order, I did the feed me tasting. The fried oysters on stained glass was one of the worst crimes against an oyster I have ever participated in.

The wines suck also and their "pairing" was the Cavit collection on repeat.

Ancora's salted caramel gelato and the gelato with the limoncello and coffee....:drool :. They make their gelato in-house too. Best ice cream/gelato I've ever had.

Where does Andrea's fall on the list??

Had lunch at Marcello's and it was excellent. They have a great list of paninis and regular dishes with a few specials.

I went once on someone else's dime and thought it was not terrible, not awesome .. but just "unique" I guess is a good way to describe the food? This was 1 year 1/2 ago, I need to give it another shot. Veal was good, calamari was alright. Bread was pretty killer.

also, Midget.. you ever give us a result of this thread? Eleven79 vs. Cafe Giovanni

I'm a fan of Adolfo's! It's a small intimate place but the prices are good and the food is great!

Del Porto on the northshore. Everything I've had there has been excellent. From apps to desert.
