Count me as another person who dislikes intensely close tables. But you have the opportunity while being seated to reject the table: my rather deaf husband can't hear me if seated against a reflective surface like a plate glass window, or directly in front of a speaker or next to a noisy cooler, etc. More often than not, we politely request a different table...or ask upfront to be seated in a quiet spot. Very few places will outright reject your politely phrased request, in my experience.

That said, Peche is too damn noisy overall. Civilized people shouldn't have to shout over the background din. But sadly, so many restos think that a noisy room is a happy one. I have a fairly long list of "no go" places due to noise.

Either you are really fat are grossly exaggerating because that spacing is not that bad. There is a good 2 ft between those tables, not 6 inches

my server told me to get the Tuna Collar.
I loved it.

We also got the shrimp roll, the steak dish, the fried Brussels sprouts and the beets. Also the cold Drum salad (only thing we didn't all love)

If you go to Peche and don't get fish off the fire grill, you done messed up.

People will defend Peche ad nauseam.

First class restaurant can't execute "kiddy food"? Oh, you ordered the wrong thing

No offense, but you should have been able to see through that.

I went and didn't touch the hush puppies, fish sticks, etc.

I've only been once and got the eggplant dip, lamb, skirt steak and civche. It was awesome.

We should eat together, Boon. I love the shrimp toast, too. The meal you suggest would be fine with me. Might have a little bisque with it, though, to ensure that we roll on out of there.

OP, I don't think of Peche as a place for private dining and since those bench seats are set up for two people a table, I wouldn't expect to say "table for two" and get a private table. I have no problem with those seats. You have a separate table, so I don't really see the big deal. The other tables are pretty close together, anyway. They are in a lot of restaurants.

OP expected to be blown away by fish sticks (which he admits are decent with lemon and tartar), two soups, and hush puppies. He liked the lamb skewers.

Its not defending, but if I went to Le Bernardin and ordered steak and said "I dont know, it didnt blow me away" that would be user error.

I agree with the other posters in that what you ordered would certainly not have been my first choices. But a restaurant should execute everything they serve really well. I hate it when the restaurant has a very ambitious menu, where only half of it is well executed and the rest they just mail it in.

No one said those are dishes no one should order or they're bad. It's knowing what to order if you want the best possible experience at a particular restaurant.

OP's exact words:

quote:

We didn't think the food was bad.

They didn't not execute on "kiddie food." OP just ordered the wasn't blown away (because he did in fact order the wrong stuff) and had the completely wrong expectations of what the atmosphere would be like, which I guarantee influenced his thoughts on the food.

You're trying too hard.

yeah I notice

and this is where a good wait staff is crucial. a waiter should be able to suggest the cornerstone items on a menu, and the customer should not have to do research ahead of time to determine if said waiter is right or wrong. also a top notch place should not have 2-3 good dishes and the rest a bunch of bland menu fillers. just because something has a cute name does not mean it isn't good, so ordering "fish sticks," aka beer battered fried fish, when the waiter suggests is as a staple is not so unheard of. apparently the name is equally important if not more so than the food itself to many here. I guess if it were called Wahoo a la Parmevade then all the naysayers would be shouting how it's the best fried fish they have ever eaten and everyone is just stupid for not ordering it at every Peche experience. Oh the horror

I've been there twice and while I liked it, I wasn't blown away like many other posters appear to have been. I had some grilled fish with the salsa verde and it was very good and was I believe $38. When I went back the second time, the same exact fish was $53. I guess Link can charge as much as he wants as long as people are ordering it. I didn't care for the tuna dip, either.

in fact id say any one of those dishes would be a fine compliment to a meal.... but to go to a premiere fish restaurant and get fish dip, fish sticks, 2 soups, lamb and hush puppies probably would not be the ideal approach.... whether at peche, or any place of that variety.

its a place known for great raw preparations that change daily and their awesome grill.... you got fried, dip, soup, and lamb.

you didnt think the whole grilled fish of the day at a place called peche seafood grill was probably a cornerstone menu item?

Apparently the server who recommended them

So the guy ordering the food is wrong or is the restaurant who didnt execute a simple dish on their menu to be blamed?

And I fully acknowledge Peche does some great dishes
