I know a small bar owner who stopped taking credit cards b/c of the fees. He whined that he couldnt afford them. He promptly installed an ATM machine that charged $3.00 to use. It wasn't a bank affiliated ATM. It was my understanding that the bar owner supplied the ATM with the cash. Not sure what the fee was for the company that owned the ATM. So, $3.00 to use it, then you get hit with another $1.50 from your bank for using an out of network ATM. The patrons bitched, the bar owner didn't care. He lost a ton of business. Finally he switched back to taking credit cards, but it was too late. He went out of business. I hate places that are cash only. I never carry cash and don't feel that I should have to make a special trip to the ATM. I just go somewhere else.

It's not a good practice to use a credit card at a bar.. But again.. to each his own.

I agree in some cases, but not every bar is a college aged place or a crazy night club. I visit my neighborhood bars 2 or 3 times a week and use credit cards 100% of the time.

I'm wasn't even thinking about a college age place or a crazy night club.. Any bar is a bad idea.

it's not a good idea to open a tab at a crowded bar that you have no control over on a credit card .. i agree ..

Why? I'm thinking you may be young and not have alot of experience with different kinds of bars or something. I stop at a place after work. Usually 5-10 people there. Know the bartenders. After I'm done drinking, they give me a receipt. I review, then hand them my card. I pay. I get points. What is the problem again?

If you're in a situation where you know the people, you're a regular etc.. It's not the same.. (I'm not young by the way, and have indeed been to quite a few bars..) But in a crowded situation, a number of things could happen with your credit or debit cards. No matter how old you are you should know this. It's very easy for example, for you to run a tab on your card and then have another patron be handed your credit or debit card that looks exactly like theirs and walk out with your card.. Things like this happen all the time. It's also possible for additional charges to be applied to a card, unwittingly or not. There's plenty scenarios that can occur and I'm not going to list and argue the points of each one.. I just use cash at a bar and don't worry about it.. but like I said.. to each his own.

I understand it's a business choice, but average check goes up when you allow customers to use credit/debit. In many cases, it can off set the fees...

Which is altogether another reason I use cash only at a bar..

Serious question, isn't this changing because of the new credit card reform act? That it would be $0.21 per transaction - which is great if you're selling a $1000 TV, but much more than it used to be for a $5 burger. I can't remember where I originally read that, but here's a link that sort of touches on it: LINK

As a merchant and a customer, I really like it. F**k the banks and their parasitic skimming on the entire economy. My company spends a ~$1M/yr in CC transaction fees. For what? Work? GMAFB. You know those reward credit cards? You know who pays for those rewards? Not the CC company -- rather, it's the merchant who pays an extra fee at the time of transaction. Black Card has the highest transaction fee of all (~5% per First Data). In fact the higher the customer's credit limit, the higher the fee. If you give a crap about local merchants, use cash. I always use CC at Walmart and other large chains though. Screw them. The world would be a much better place without Walmart. Period. And the .Gov hates cash because it can be used without their knowledge and therefore could theoretically be spent without them and their owners (banks) getting a piece. Frickin A! They take enough of my hard earned money as it is before I even get it. Cash. Is. King. Money Talks. Bullshott walks.

I think people miss the point here.. Without Credit Cards, the proliferation of spending within our country would nose dive. We live on credit as a society and CC companies provide the service and risk to all the continued spending.. I don't own a restaurant but I do pay 60k a year in processing fees to credit cards companies and I'm thankful every month when they take out their cut. What many business don't realize is how negotiable the rate can be especially with high volume.

My sentiments exactly. But if you really feel that way about WalMart, you need to stop going there. It can be done. Really.

It's mostly places like smaller local businesses that you'll drop less than $25 (that I'm aware of) that do cash only.. A restaurant with a $50 to $200 price point is less likely to be cash only.

Nah. I show I give a crap about local merchants by dining or shopping at their places. I try to avoid national chains for both restaurants and grocery stores most of the time. You will accept my credit card or I will take my business elsewhere. It's really pretty simple.

Yep. I use cards for 3 things. Hotels, air fare and rental cars while travelling. That is it. Cash for everything else.
