One of Abita's brewers was at a seminar at Top of the Hops and one of the things he was talking about was how they're somewhat limited on the styles of beers they can produce because of their water supply (abita springs). It doesn't lend itself well to some styles of beers and this is likely part of the reasoning as to why you don't see them experimenting too much.

Dogfish Head will try anything. They don't always make a winner, for sure. I've had several from them that I haven't enjoyed. They've had some swings and misses, but they are willing to take a chance. Abita doesn't even get up to the plate.

Exactly.

I've had the following from DFH

90 Minute IPA
60 Minute IPA
Raison D'etre
Indian Brown Ale
Midas Touch
Aprihop
Palo Santo Marron
Punkin Ale
My Antonia

And i have Tweason'Ale and Bitches Brew in the fridge.

I've liked all of them. The only exception being Midas Touch tastes a little off sometimes, and i'm just tired of Raison D'etre because i bought to many 6 packs.

Really???

While this is true it certainly doesn't stop other breweries from altering their water. Some use reverse osmosis to completely "Build" their own water from the ground up to suit a particular style of beer.

I'd think it has a lot more to do with a mentality there than what they're capable of.

Yes. "Knowing the character of your local water source as well as how to adjust it to improve your beer is a critical skill, particularly for more advanced brewers."

The entire last section is about how to adjust the water profile to suit different styles.

Styles originated with certain profiles because this used to be way too advanced but now even homebrewers can get their water profile reports and adjust things accordingly.

if they would start bottling their Select lineup.

They could (with the exception of the strawberry because some people really like it) replace their "seasonal" line with the Select beers and move a few steps up the ladder.

really? water cannot be adjusted in a fairly simple and cost effective manner to reach appropriate pH, TSS, and hardness levels for the type of ale or lager desired for brewing?

damn the luck

I know that St. Arnold did not make an IPA until they got their reverse osmosis system in. Now they can make any beer they want.

Haven't read all 7 pages and IDGAF what you think of my opinion but really... Who gives a flying frick what one person thinks about another person's favored beer? It's just that! One person favors it over another. Someone not liking a beer doesn't mean that particular brewery sucks or the beer sucks. It just means that person doesn't like it. No one's taste buds are the same and no two average beer drinkers will get the same taste from a beer. It's all in what you like.

To those of you who insist on putting down another man for drinking a beer, get the sand out of your vaginas and lighten up. Are his tastebuds in your mouth? I didn't think so... (unless you happen to favor another man's tongue in your mouth too, but in that case we can understand why you're such a douche at that point).

To all my other beer fans who could care less what another man thinks of their beers, here's to you!

I don't care what you drink. I care what I drink. Thus I'm explaining why I don't drink Abita very often.

They could also not produce as much strawberry. I think i would like it better if it was only a limited quantity. But this year, there are still walls of strawberry lining grocery stores.

Typical.

If you had said that first instead of saying "they liked to your face" the whole issue is different.

That's a sorry excuse not to expand brewing styles.

Hell, if homebrewers can alter their water profiles, there is no reason why Abita couldn't do it.

I think they are content with producing mediocre beer.

They made way too much this year. Last year, you couldn't find it after May. As you said, this year there are still pallets of it in many stores.
