re: Perspective: 7-5 vs. FBS Opponents in November Since 2010
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 12/1/13 at 9:01 am to omegaman66
The reason November games are important is because September games are mostly pansy, rent-a-wins (look at LSU's 2014 schedule before you comment otherwise), and the early SEC schedule in October differentiates between the leaders of the pack and all others. By the time November gets here, you know who the "players" for post-season spots are. Hence, November games seem to have more influence. Who cares if an Arkansas team with a losing record loses in November? Buts lots of people care if aTm beats Mizzou.
re: Why did CBS/refs ignore the hit on Landry?

On Loston's hit, the Bama wide receiver wasn't on the ground. If you arent on the ground, you arent down. He was on top of a defender, so it wasn't even illegal. Please spare me the suggestion that I am delusional until you watch the replay. Thanks.

Ole Miss was 8 of 10 on 3rd and long (which I defined as 6 yards or further). You can't win if your defense can't get off the field.
re: Spinoff: LSU will be screwed under the "playoff" system
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 10/18/13 at 3:48 pm to MontanaTiger
Montana is right. Changing the number of teams selected (from two to four) should not require the dismantlement of the BCS formula in general, unless you want to take other non-merit considerations into account, like geography, fan-base, media favorites, etc.
As cynical as this may seem, I don't think LSU would make the playoffs at 11-1 if it didn't win the SEC West, but I do think Alabama would be invited to the dance under the precise same scenario, as it was in 2011. And I fear the predictions of underperforming champions from the Big Ten and Pac 12 will be invited are all too true.
But if we are really trying to predict how the SEC will get screwed by the new playoffs, I will go on record that IF two SEC teams are ever invited to the four-team playoff, they will have to play each other in the semis. They won't be on opposite sides of the bracket so as to eliminate any possibility of an all SEC final.

re: Great bar/restaurant to watch game in NO

The Bulldog is an awesome sports bar, but not the most romantic. You can try Cafe Adelaide at the Loews Hotel. It's a Brennan's restaurant, and the bar is cool. Or go to Nola's and eat at the bar. There is a big screen tv you can see from the bar but not from the dining room. That's a winner. Try that.

I certainly hope the game doesn't turn on the success of our half-time coaching adjustments. That's not exactly our strength.

Seriously, does anyone know why we couldn't run that blocked PAT back? Is it because it went beyond the line of scrimmage?

Great downfield blocking.

The linesman wasn't going to make an obvious call right in front of him.

We have to throw the ball downfield. Throw it 50 yards downfield three times in a row, if necessary. Only three things can happen: completion, incompletion or interception. Even if it's intercepted, at least we get the equivalent of a 50 yard punt. I don't call a pass five yards downfield as "opening it up."
(they just tried to throw to Boone; do it again).

re: Interesting parallel between Les & Steve Spurrier...
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 10/10/12 at 9:46 am to GFunk
I thought this post was going to comment on the fact that Spurrier was a wiz at offense, but knew he had to bring in Bob Stoops to run the defense at Florida. Only after he opened the purse to pay Stoops to come did Florida win the National Championship.. Miles isn't a wiz at either, but he should know he can't continue with the status quo. He needs to hire a quality OC and stay out of the way.
re: What are the chances we get a real offensive coordinator after this season?
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 10/7/12 at 8:38 pm to Tigerbait357
If by "real" you mean "new," then I would say 50/50. If you mean autonomous, then I would say 10/90, which is code for it just won't happen.
re: Lessons from Les' decision to play JJ exclusively after Bama 1 and on 1/9/2012
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 10/7/12 at 5:37 pm to dgnx6
I'm not saying a qb change would have made a difference. I'm saying the same stubborn refusal to TRY a different qb in the face of utter and total failure is reflective of the poor judgment we see today. Miles won't change his offense no matter how bad it stinks, just like he wouldn't replace JJ when we never crossed the 50 yard line on 1/9.

Exactly. Well said.

Maybe you should consider the fact that in the first eight games, we were normally so far ahead at the half that the second half play calling became very conservative, even more so than Miles' normal style. I certainly don't remember a time when we went 3 and out seven times in a row under Lee. Regardless, my point is that Les refused to make a change after JJ obviously stunk it up. If you think JJ was awesome against Arky, fine. He sucked SUCKED (!!) against Ga. Les' stubbornness is the point of this post, not who was better, Lee or JJ. Thankfully, the 1/9/2012 performance answered that question forever, and Les wasn't right. Even if you disagree with that, no one can honestly think that Les' decision to leave JJ in the entire game demonstrates good judgment.
Lessons from Les' decision to play JJ exclusively after Bama 1 and on 1/9/2012
Posted by Msgulfcoasttiger on 10/7/12 at 1:31 pm
I am NOT trying to open a new discussion about JJ and Lee. But I do think that Les' stubborn insistence upon playing JJ exclusively in the face of terrible offensive performances against Arkansas, Georgia and then Bama in the BCS championship game demonstrates that he simply has no clue that his offense (Yes, HIS offense) simply sucks. How anyone could think that our offensive performance IMPROVED with JJ at the helm simply cannot see the forest for the trees. His stubborn streak simply won't allow him to see the truth. That's why so many of us were frustrated last year when he replaced Lee, under whom the offense was doing quite well (for the most part, I recognize the Bama 1 performance was lacking, but it's not like JJ lit it up either), in favor of an offense that NEVER moved the ball. Seven 3 and outs in a row in a half tells the tale.
And that is exactly what he is CHOOSING to do with this year's offense. My guess is that the first drive was scripted, which explains why it was the most successful possession of the day. After that, they began ad libbing, meaning Les defaulted to his norm, and the performance worsened over the course of the day. The same judgment that gave us JJ over Lee in the face of objectively obvious evidence (I think even the positards conceded the issue after 1/9/2012) is giving us play calling that leads to zero offensive output. This is simply more of the same poor judgment and lack of insight.
I've seen something related on other threads. This offense is boring. Even if we win, it's not very fun to watch. I know I prefer to win, but I was frustrated when we won so ugly last year. The wins against Arky and Georgia were a function of special teams play and defensive scores, which simply masked a more obvious problem -- the same problem we now see in this year's offense. Les interpreted those wins as reinforcement that his scheme was working, rather than a wake up call to effect changes. Arky and Georgia showed exactly what Bama had to do to shut us down, and they did. I fear the Florida game will provide the same roadmap to everyone else on the schedule. And given that Les is blind or stubborn, or both, it's going to be a long, upsetting and frustrating season from here on out.

Absolutely. Miles totally f***ed JL, and I personally believe his refusal to play Lee in the Arkansas, Georgia and NCG will adversely affect recruiting for years to come. Les is either a terrible judge of talent or plays extreme favoritism. If you won't pull a qb after such an abysmal offensive performance, you are just a stubborn arse.

Did he ever answer why he continued to play JJ in the Georgia game after seven 3 & outs in a row?

Guys:
Do we really have to agree to disagree that Miles stopped giving Lee significant playing time after Bama 1? Seriously. It's objectively obvious he stopped playing Lee after Bama 1. That really isn't subject to discussion. Everyone knows that Lee didn't get significant playing time after Bama 1. The REASON Miles stopped playing Lee has been the subject of a lot of debate.
My comment is limited to the observation that if Choctaw is correct about Lee skipping class -- and I don't know that he is right about that and I am not saying one way or the other -- it seems obvious that Lee's mental outlook would be adversely affected when he learned he wasn't going to start against Western Kentucky, and then didn't see significant playing time from that point on.
If Lee was in a funk after Bama 1, and he could have been, then it stands to reason that funk would have gotten worse after Miles reduced/eliminated his playing time in favor of JJ. That's all I'm saying.
And this isn't based on any unique factual information, btw. It's just my OPINION.
