Social Security
Posted by LSUCrawdaddy on 11/30/10 at 12:28 pm
Just received my paycheck today :dude:
Noticed that and additional $49.80 was withheld from my pay check for social security this pay period. My salary did not increase but I'm short about $50. Asked boss man wtf, he said maybe QuickBooks has a new social security withholding table. Did with holding for social security change in last 2 weeks?

I found a high deductable policy ($5k). It covers me (31), wife (30) and our 6month old for about $300/month. We started a HSA for each employee enrolled and the deductable ($5k for family and $2500 for single) is incorporated into their yearly salary as a tax free bonus. Once the deductable is met, Insurance pays 100% of EVERYTHING. We just started in August, so the only thing we have been out of pocket is the doctors visit for my sons immunizations, but I just wrote a check from my health savings account to cover the cost.

Thanks everyone. I know the only reason behind this move is to save the company on payroll taxes for 2010; or at least that’s the assumption of the employer. And yes, there will be a bonus and it better be BIG as this was the best year we have ever had. Total sales wise and most importantly, profit.

The employer wants to pay everyone in advance. The goal is to pay everyone on 12/15 for all of December and January. This will make January’s paycheck as taxable income for the 2010 tax year but only making the taxable amount for 2011 based on 11 months of income instead of 12. That is of course unless the employer decides to do the same thing again.

I typed FICA while I was thinking about social security and I deal with social security numbers (SSN) all day long. I may have been typing faster than my brain could compute. The question remains what would the total deduction be after federal & state withholding, Medicare and social security?
$6800 is the taxable amount.
And yes, employer does match contributions.

It may sound crazy but having the $50 per paycheck come out pre-tax acctually makes my paycheck a couple dollars more post-tax than if I didn't have the $50 taken out.

SSN = Social Security
FICA = Federal Witholding
sorry about that, my head is spinning 1000 ways this morning

Have employer that would like to have the next paycheck cover that pay period as well as the next three. Those 4 paychecks add up to $7000. Out of that $7k, $200 is going into retirement (Before you ask why so little is going to retirement, I’m paying down debt). My question is, out of this $6800. How much should I expect this check to be after FICA, State, SSN, & Medicare? I’m married with 1 child.

I've only been in my home for a year and half no $$$$$'s down so HELOC was out of the question.

UPDATE: Was approved for my $10k signature loan today. No co-signer needed. Only thing is the bank wanted to write the check to Chase to make sure that card is paid off and then they will write me a check for the diff. :nana: This is a huge relief now after the CC's are paid off all I will have is my mortgage (5%), wife's VW (4.9%) and the sig loan (8.9%). Things are looking good.

Have you thought about selling your truck, buying an old reliable pickup, and using the difference to pay some debt?

I think most of the CC out there are variable rate's and at the end of the promotion period they go up to the service rate, usually around 12-13% APR now. I have one card that is 8.99% and has been for the past 3 or 4 years that I transferred higher APR CC balances too in order to pay them off quicker. I do not want another card that will raise my rate because they feel like they can. I have cut up all the ones I had and have decided I will never own another (may have one with a $1k or 2k limit that I know I can pay off in a couple months for emergences).
Issue of not getting the yearend bonus and wife working less (pregnant, she is due at the end of April). My income alone is just getting us by. I have budgeted our money and after all bills and money taken out for groceries and gas, we have about $150 every two weeks in discretionary funds. I don’t think now is the time to ask for a raise (although I deserve one, it’s been two years since I asked for my last one and I have taken on a lot of responsibility and work longer hours) My subtle attempt at self gratification.

I've been doing that with my Chase CC since '08 and have had them lower it to one so far. I call every other month and have even had the customer service people tell me "That sucks". My biggest mistake was counting for my end of year bonus (usually $4k-$6), which I've always used to pay off CC balances. This year nobody recieved one, but thats another story I dont even want to go into.

I hadn't thopught about the tax breaks on the HELOC, but like I said we have lived in the home for a little over a year so how much equity could we have?

BTW: CC's have been destroyed. I had two bank cards and two gas cards, wife had 3 bank cards and a old navy.

What kind of interest rate are you seeing? I have been thinking of doing the same thing.
I'm seeing sig loans at 8.99% at credit unions. I have a cc that we used to pay for $5k of our wedding back in '07, had a 0% rate. When gustav came we went to gulf shores for a week and missed one payment which made caused the rate to sky rocket to 35%. I've gotten down to 29.9% now.
I've been in my home for a little over a year but have made major improvments so I may have some equity but do not want to go the way of HELOC.
Line of credit or Signature Loan
Posted by LSUCrawdaddy on 2/10/10 at 4:27 pm
Looking into getting either a line of credit or signature loan.
Reason: To pay off credit card debt on cards that are now upwards of 20% one even pushes 29.9%. Wife and I have a little over $10k in credit card debt.
We own have a house note ($974/month) and two :banghead: car notes ($700/month). Her transmission went out last year on her Honda that had over 200k miles. My truck note will be paid off this summer so we thought we could swing it at the time since we had some savings.
Savings are gone (due to medical bills and high deductable ins).
