re: I heard layoffs happened at Schlumberger today

Work in the consulting engineering side of O&G.
2 of our larger projects were put on hold today with layoffs expected later this week. Seems like 2015 will be an interesting ride.

re: Time to buy some XOM(Oil stock discussions)?

Looks like I jumped the gun on initiating a position in COP. Got in last week at $72. Will average down if it goes much lower.
What about KMI? They have already stated that the dividend will be $2 per share next year and with the current stock price that yield is almost 6%. They also plan on raising the dividend ~10% each year.

re: Best credit card with "investment" account rewards.....

I have the card and we put everything we buy on it. The rewards rack up very quickly. Debated getting the card for a few months, but certainly glad we did.
Others have mentioned issues with the card while traveling, but I have not encountered this issue on any of travels both in the US and abroad.

Have had the card for the last 6 months and have not had any issues with it. Have made some pretty large purchases on it as well.
We pay everything on the card so really good to see the cash balance in the Fidelity account increase each month for my stock buying.

re: Who else got a crappy raise this year?
Posted by Kerndog on 1/20/14 at 1:47 pm to Neil Caffrey
So for the past couple of years you have received 5% raises twice a year? Then they come back and give you 2-3% at the start of this year?
Maybe you will be getting another bump later this year.
Only way to know if you are getting paid fairly would be to drop a resume with a few firms and see if anyone bites.
Good Luck

From talking to friends in O&G close to 60 would be low for 3+ years of experience.
100% agree.
3 years experience and I am well over this number.
Please note that I don't focus on CE 100% - that is my degree. Money is in the PM channels.

Kerndog what industry area are you in?
O&G - work for a consulting firm.
Greatest bump I received was by going out and getting an offer from another company and having my current employer match it. Worst case scenario was that they say no and I move to the new company for a 20% bump.

Out of curiosity, where are you at with your salary?
$60k? $70k?
Do you feel you are fairly compensated in comparison to peers in the industry? Have you kept in touch with college classmates at different employers and inquired about where they are at with their pay? This would help you judge where you are at in comparison to the market.
At the end of the day, you have to look out for numero uno. May not be worth waiting a year for the PE if you can get a decent bump by moving elsewhere.

First job out of college.
Got a couple of promotions. Hot market has made employer generous in an effort to keep people from leaving to take better offers elsewhere.
Never thought I would be making what I am in such a short time out of college, but definitely have no complaints.
Have you considered talking to your employer about your pay and seeing if there is any room for a greater increase? If they seem unwilling to budge, it may be time to test the market and see what you are worth to other companies.

Can't really complain since my pay has gone up over 50% in a little over 3 years. :nana:
