re: VOTE FOR THE BAND

The set number used to be 180 members in the 60's and the Tiger Band sounded just as big and warm as the modern version. A lot has to do with the scoring of musical arrangements. John Edmunds, the staff arranger back then employed a technique which is still used somewhat today. That is he scored the low brass in octaves with a middle low brass part a fifth above the bass (fourth below the upper octave). Even the tenor sax parts were scored that way to add richness to the low brass sound. Then, all clarinet parts mirrored the trumpet parts. ae: 3rd clarinet played the 1st trumpet part an octave lower; 2nd clarinet played third trumpet part; 1st clarinet usually played the 2nd trumpet part. No flutes of course. Percussion was nowhere near what it is today. Just used snare, tenor and bass...and glock parts reinforced the piccolos. All in all the created that "warm" sound that was known across the country as a unique Tiger Band sound. Everyone tried to emulate it. Today's Tiger Band still has that warmth and I hear some of the same orchestration techniques being used. But the overwhelming reason the band sounds great is because of a terrific group of band directors along with their assistants and fine musicians throughout the ensemble.
I love our Band!!!

I'm sorry dude from Tulane, but if you thought the USC group was the best, you must have been listening to a different performance than the rest of us. If your ears are that bad you should not be allowed to listen to music much less comment on a performance. :spank:

I listened to all the bands. LSU had the best balance and intonation. Drum section is a bit echoey indoors but did not detract from the precision. The dotted eighth-sixteenth figures were pretty clean...much more so than the other bands although Auburn and Texas did well placing the sixteenth note properly. We could hear all three trumpet parts and good balance in the low brass. Horns and altos had exceptionally good pitch...not so with any of the other groups represented. Good dynamic contrasts throughout and excellent phrase endings. In spite of all the intricate in-place movements by the players there was no notice of the music suffering at any time. This is difficult! Of course Frank and Linda wisely planned movements which required the least amount of interference with the musical lines. Great band directors...both.
Wickes' band at Florida thirty years ago sounded miles better than it does today. Glad that Wickes is at LSU.
My vote goes to the only Tiger Band! Nice touch adding Les at the end!!!

I'm in Austin and will be without access to TV...only radio. Does anyone know which radio station will carry the LSU-AUBURN game?

Can I catch a break, please? If I'm not worried about my family getting smacked by a hurricane in LA and missing another LSU game I have to worry about tropical force winds and not watching UT get spanked by the SEC this weekend. I can't win!!!
Hey Kellesu...we probably won't have power in Austin so we'll likely miss the LSU Game anyway. Must run out and buy plenty of batteries for the radio...this could turn out to suck almost as bad as last Saturday :wah:

re: Double header in Dome
Posted by LSU Alum 1969 on 9/5/08 at 11:32 pm to kjacksonp
Why not make it a real double header and play Tulane while we're there. That way we get both North Texas and the Greenies out of the way early. Then we can take another open date on November 1. In fact, they wouldn't even need to clear the stadium between games. Certainly we can accommodate the 10 or 12 fans from both Tulane and NT.

South Carolina is NOT a top ranked SEC team ...
Correct...what I should have said was I hate to see ranked SEC teams lose. Didn't mean to imply that SC was by any means a top SEC team.

Got that right...hate to see any top ranked SEC team lose. Maybe Vandy will replace SC in the top 25???...or not.

Personally, I hope tOSU beats the living jock itch out of them. They call us arrogant (gotta admit, we do tend to be now and then)...Hell, those guys are the personification of arrogance.

Polls shouldn't be out this early, but since they are, you can't fault them for voting USC ahead of the other contenders for the top spot.
I have to agree Tiger n Chains. I just get annoyed, as do others, about the "love" heaped on USC and tOSU by the media. I'm just jealous and grumpy.
re: LSU still No. 6 in Coaches Poll, No. 7 in AP
Posted by LSU Alum 1969 on 9/2/08 at 2:16 pm to lsucoon
Assuming neither USC, OSU nor UGA loses next week... going into week 3 will probably be USC #1 and OSU #2 in the Associated Press. To be sure, ABC is already drooling over the hype of broadcasting No. 1 faces No. 2 in the "Best Game of the Weak...er...Week" ESPN will be
:wah: at their collective desks because they won't be broadcasting that game and will have to settle for the rest of us lesser quality teams. Thus UGA gets screwed once again by dropping down yet another notch without ever having lost a game. What a croc! :banghead:
