None of this is reflected in the movie, fwiw. You always see Charlie doing the work and chores around the house, while Bella mopes.
Charlie works his nuts off, only to be rewarded by a daughter that respects him enough to lie to him about everything, disobeys him unashamedly, gets him and everyone else around her in mortal danger.
Twilight might be better if Bella was generally a good person. She isn't. Daniel Plainview is more sympathetic.
If I hadn't read the book, I would fully agree with you, FWIW. Its just difficult for ANY director to put an entire 500+ page book into a two hour movie without losing some pieces.
The book and the movie start off on a happy note and then quickly move to the sad part where Bella is grieving her loss. In the book its described at length that Bella is still cooking for her dad and doing her best to put on a brave face. It is somewhat different in the film.
The Volturi/vampires have rules about humans knowing about them... thats why at the end the Volturi tell Edward and Alice that either they need to make Bella or kill her-- she can't just go on knowing their secret without consequence.
Early on in Twilight, the novel, its explained that Charlie can't know and its for his safety... if the Volturi find out he knows, then his life is at risk. And again, the actions in Eclipse are a direct consequence of the Cullen's killing James. In Twilight, when James, Laurent and Victoria meet the Cullen's, James wanted to kill Bella when he realized she was human. Edward's reaction to protect her is what set him off. So either they could let James kill her or they kill James.
Another thing I found interesting is how vampire's mate for life... lol. Seriously. Its described in a lot of detail in the book New Moon how Carlisle won't lose Edward again and thats why he's voting "yes" to "turn" Bella. Its what Bella wants anyway.
I think I'm the only female in this thread and that might be why I'm more sympathetic to Bella's plight. She is generally a good person, but no, not always likable. She went to live with her dad so her mom could be with Phil. She cooks for her dad so he doesn't have to worry about it. The problem comes in with her obsession with Edward...
quote:
Frankly, I think this is a horrible story for young girls. It is really easy to be so in love and obsessed with someone when you will be young and beautiful and rich and have no problems for eternity, but shite ain't like that. Hell, even Steph constantly compares them to Romeo and Juliet, not exactly a healthy couple either.
I agree that its not the healthiest message for young girls. And yeah, Bella does have to rely on others to save her arse all the time.
BUT-- *Spoiler* In the final book, when Bella becomes a vampire, its like she was born to be a vampire. She's powerful and capable and all the things she dealt with as a human are different for her... granted, I hated the last book as I found Bella to be unsympathetic and vain... but Steph was trying to make it seem like Bella had finally found her place in the world.
And again, teenage girls are self-centered, dramatic and infuriating most of the time... at least she didn't make Bella some perfect example... I think there's a message in there somewhere, although where it is, I don't know...
Perhaps someone else has addressed some of your concerns, point by point... but I'll take a go at it.
The thing about the books is that Twilight is 499 pages, New Moon is over 500 pages Eclipse (coming out in film on June 30, 2010) is over 600 and Breaking Dawn is a whopping 762 pages long... try fitting even half the book into a two hour movie.
Jasper was a confederate solider when he was turned and spent a significant amount of time as a young vampire at war with other vampires. He is still adjusting to life as a "vegetarian." This gets explained at length in BD, I believe.
Alice: Even Edward finds Alice to be obnoxious half the time, despite her being his favorite sister. Its Alice's personality to be over-the-top and to be in people's business...
Rosalie: Rosalie's backstory explains why she's such a bitch. She was turned in the 1930's I believe after she was brutally assaulted by her fiancee and his friends. I believe she was also raped. All she wanted in her human life was to be a wife and a mother... what upsets her about Bella is that Bella is throwing everything Rosalie always wanted, away for a life that Rosalie finds difficult to bear.
Emmet: Emmett we know the least about. He is very fond of Bella in the books and adores her like a little sister. I think he balances the more-intense Cullen's out nicely with his humor.
Wolfpack: The reason the wolf pack only wears shorts is because when they morph into wolves, their clothes get torn. Imagine how expensive that is. Also, its explained in the books that its difficult enough to tie a pair of shorts around your ankle to carry with you when you transform, its even more difficult to carry an entire outfit with you...
Volturi group: The Volturi makes another appearnce in the last book, Breaking Dawn and while Jane (Dakota Fanning) doesn't have a speaking role, she is featured prominently at the end. The Volturi are supposed to look pretty strange as is described in the books...
Edward: Edward's character was based off the following characters: Gilbert Blythe, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Edward Rochester. He is supposed to be written as the "perfect" guy.
Jacob: There is a very interesting and surprising revelation about Jacob in BD. I don't really like him, either, FWIW.
Bella: Meyer has caught a LOT of flack for Bella's character as she is painted as too unlikable. And while, yeah, she kind of is... I was a teenage girl once and I can relate to certain aspects of her personality. In the books, starting with New Moon, Bella and Edward and Jasper and Alice are HS Seniors and they sit with Bella's human friends during lunch. Also, Bella does ALL the cooking at home and most of the cleaning since Charlie, her dad, works all the time. Bella and Charlie are both emotionally guarded and they have a hard time expressing themselves to one another... but their RL grows. Bella often times does all his laundry AND makes fresh meals for her father-- he is far from an indentured servant. Bella also has a habit of caring for everyone else around her and trying to accomodate them without knowing how... she is just an akward teenager as any teenager would be.
Bella's bonding with Jacob goes much deeper than you're assuming. And she is not getting people killed for her own amusement... almost every attack against her and her friends is the direct result of ONE incident... the Cullen's killing James in Twilight. Victoria is not letting that go.

filled in nicely

I saw it in theaters and cried my arse off.
My yellow lab was only a few months old at the time. I went home that night and wouldn't let her out of my arms I didn't want to let her go!
But that being said... the movie was awful and they needed to train that dog!

I learned from my mom's mistake... she leased a car and at the end of the lease... was very sorry she'd done that.
Like I said... it's worse than buying new. At least after a few years you still have the car... and if you need to, you can sell it.
You don't have that option with a lease.
You don't have that option with a lease.
Do NOT lease a vehicle... it's a bad idea... an even worse idea than buying new.
You only get so many miles you're allowed to put on the vehicle during your lease, ANY ding, nick or scratch is going to go against you when your lease is up... You get charged for any mile you go over your allotted amount.
At the end of the term, you don't get to keep the car, you have to trade it in... so all you did was rent it...

Chick-fil-A!
I am fat. :booboo:
Look, what I said was, on a msgboard, I don't really care. I don't take anything here to heart... IRL, I most definitely do care. Just like I care if I'm being called anything else that is meant in a derogatory fashion... like fat.

I don't see a "point" to any of this. I see differing opinions.

Shut up, you. :booboo:
Thank you, Black.
TT05 and TP...
We are obviously very different people. No offense intended, but I doubt we could be friends IRL... you two would drive me up a wall. It's not because I don't "respect" myself or that I'm "trashy", it's more like I have a firm grip on what is really hurtful. A word is a word-- whether or not it's hurtful depends on who it comes from. Another person can call me whatever they want. If I know it's not true, why would I have any cause to care what they say?
As adult women I would think you'd have enough self confidence and common sense to put things in perspective. A word can be insulting, sure. It also depends on who it is coming from and how it is said. Would I tolerate my boyfriend saying it or a stranger? No. Just like I wouldn't tolerate them calling me a bitch or anything else I find to be unflattering.
But should I really care if the OT calls me a count or bitch or whatever? It's a message board. If being called a name on a message board really hurts somebody's feelings, it's probably time to re-evaluate how they view themselves and stop frequenting that board.
JMO.

It's a message board woman, we don't really know eachother.
A "better person", that's funny, again, I can promise you-- I'm not a better person than you think.
Again, it's a message board, you're taking this far too seriously.
