This is key and why these coaching contracts continue to be ridiculous even after disasters like Jimbo Fisher, Brian Kelly and Mike Norvell. Coaches can threaten to blow up the roster. It’s a reality of the transfer portal era that didn’t exist a previously. Once we hired DeBoer, we were stuck with him for a while unless his performance was so bad that nobody else would take him.

I’m absolutely sick of the lawsuits, the local judges, seventh year seniors, schools playing dirty with NIL and tampering and if this is the line in the sand the SEC draws to stop the nonsense then I support it. LSU happened to be the school that went all in: Kiffin, private equity, tampering, lawsuits, etc. so zero sympathy here for them.

Apologies if this has been explained elsewhere but where are these 50M roster numbers coming from? Revenue share is capped at 20m and the House Settlement was supposed to make sure that NIL deals are legitimate fair market value business deals with third parties by running everything through a clearinghouse. I get that in the early days schools and collectives were doing whatever they want with no rules but now I don’t think any athletic department can spend more than 20M?

Crazy how quickly things escalated. I remember Saban saying in 2022 that Bryce Young made about $1M. That was back when NIL was actually NIL. Then the three Texas schools and Tennessee realized they could just get away with blatant pay for play and now QBs I have never heard of and that have accomplished nothing are getting 5-6M.

Thank you for a reasonable response - this was the first post I’ve seen that did a good job explaining why a lot of the fanbase is defending him. I personally think DeBoer was a bad hire and is not a culture fit for Alabama but I hope I’m wrong.
