It reminds me of when Osborne retired at Nebraska and his well respected replacement tried to modernize the game approach. It was an equal disaster.
I remember having the same thought to if the recruiting system and local talent was simply not conducive to the change.

First off, having watched just about every ND game twice over the last two years of Denbrock I see nothing special about his ability. He’s a serviceable coordinator that seems to work around the skill sets of his talent, but hasn’t shown the same skill set at in game transition.
One could even argue his use of tight ends is poor and situational gameplay is predictable.
As far as Freeman goes, you understand ND was his backup choice for schools to play at (choosing OSU), his family has since converted to Catholicism, and he’s just about lived his entire adult life in the Midwest. Nd has committed to updated facilities (opens next year) and assistants are now well paid (not competitive in the past). The next 2 recruiting classes are stacked with talent from all over the nation.
If he goes anywhere by choice, it will be OSU or the NFL. It’s time to move on.

Kelly had peaked at ND. He had shown an extreme resistance to changing his approach, to the point he faced an ultimatum to make changes after a disastrous 4-8 year.
ND fans were split on what the main cause of stagnation was:
Admission restrictions
Facilities
Kelly
Assistant Salaries
Transfer rules
His leaving answered some of that question, along with improvements in assistant salaries and facility upgrades which have both advanced in his departure.
