re: Favorite SEC football coach you have met
Posted by LOTOTiger on 7/7/26 at 12:55 pm to BroomfieldReb
Only have met one former SEC football coach, Gary Pinkel - we stayed late at a tailgate after a game, and he stopped and chatted as he was heading from the locker room back to the football offices (prior to the new football / South end zone building). Seemed nice enough, but it was a brief encounter. Of course they won that game, I'm sure he might have been different after a loss.
I have also met basketball coaching legend Norm Stewart (pre-SEC) a few times. Bigger than life personality, doesn't pull any punches, and is an old school Missouri guy. I thought he was great. However, I have an aquaintence who played for Norm - his opinion is much different.

Unless and until they acknledge Mizzou as the 1960 National Champions, I just ignore vacated wins as they are meaningless.

Was it comical when Aggie beat y'all 73-0 in '93?
Oh - yeah.... that game. I was there. That was actually the first time I travelled to an away game. It is shocking that I have watched any football since then without a little ptsd. But - that is what happens when your administration completely ignores the athletic department for over 10 years. It takes a generation to recover from that type of neglect.
I will say that Kyle field then vs now is clearly not the same place. It was pretty ulititarian back then (as were a lot of college venues). I don't recall all the details, and I've lost the negatives from any pictures I took, but pretty sure one end zone was completely wide open.

right - McCord (Howard replaced him)... But not a silly argument - wouldn't matter who was at QB or who was at receiver the way their line played.

woof at home and on the road...yikes
Mizzou - Tennessee has been a weird series ever since Mizzou joined the SEC. They are even up at 6 wins 6 losses against each other, yet 8 of the 12 games have been blowouts.

like their starting QB.
Howard didn't opt for the portal, Ryan Day ran him off when he made it clear he was looking to replace him the next year. That's a statement about the culture there.
Mizzou was missing 2 starters (Rakestraw and Hopper) on Defense due to "injuries" (also known as thinly veiled holdouts). Both of those starters were drafted into the NFL. We held OSU to 3 points without them.
Harrison may have made a difference, maybe not - OSUs line was abysmal in that game.

This is coming to all major programs in America I bet
Missouri has issued an RFI to developers interested in public/private developement for several areas around campus - the most obvious play is the area around the entire athletic "campus". Mixed use for condos, private housing for students, entertainment, restaurants, etc are all on the table. I have not heard what if any responses they have received so nothing definite at this point.
I think in Mizzou's case they can actually use this - as there really is NOTHING else around our Athletic facilities. It is over a mile to the main downtown bar/restaurant area, so a 15 to 20 minute walk. This has long been a knock on our football atmosphere that there are very few (any?) places near the stadium for the non-tailgate crowds (or Mizzou Arena for basketball games).

SEC making a play for the Arizona schools
If the SEC wants to go further West - this makes sense.. ASU in particular has a HUGE alumni base, if they could get that base to open their check books they could be a big time player. I never understood how they seem to stay mid-tier. Either way it's a lot of eyeballs on TVs.

Was he the HC when the 5th down happened?
No - he was fired after the 88 season. Replaced by Bob Stull - who was the coach for the 5th down debacle.
Woody is on this list because he was the HC for Vandy in late 90s early 2000s. NOTE: Woody's overall college record (Mizzou, Vandy) is an impressive 27-71-1. He was consistent if nothing else.

Mizzou - Jeremy Macklin
Maclin was well above average in the NFL. Maybe not elite, but definitely above average. He played 8 years (avg for a wide receiver is like 2.5). He had over 6000 yards receiving and 49 TDs (avg for a receiver is between 1000-2000 and 10-15). He was also a pro bowler.
For Mizzou - I'd go with Brad Smith. He is a legend for Mizzou fans, but it seems others may not remember him as much. First player in NCAA to pass for over 8000 yards and rush for over 4000 (4289 was at the time the rushing record for the QB position). He was THE piece that turned the program around under Gary Pinkel. His skillset didn't translate to NFL QB position though, and he was basically a swiss army knife used sparingly in rushing, receiving and returning kicks in the NFL.

does the Reynolds family have a say
They did for 20 years, because that's what they paid for (actually DW Reynolds foundation paid for it). Donald W Reynolds didn't have a direct affiliation with U of Ark other than his businesses operated in that region. In fact he was a Mizzou journalism graduate. Basically, it was nothing more than an early naming rights deal. I'd think the Arkansas folks would be glad to have a Mizzou grad's name off of one of their most famous buildings (I know I would if tables were turned).

Right - I just looked up both KY and TN records from that year. Pretty sure I saw KY won 8 games, TN 10 - so had this gone the other way in OT would have been a big time break through for UK.

(also note that Tennessee / KY score at the bottom of the screen grab - I don't think I've seen that game)

CommunityAmerica Razorback Stadium
When I saw this yesterday - it said the name of the stadium was going to be "Community America Credit Union Razorback Stadium".... which is quite a mouthful. Hope your version is right and they shorten it to CommunityAmerica. Of course everyone will just call it Razorback Stadium (except the TV guys, I think they are obligate to use the full name).
It's happening everywhere. Mizzou is in the process of selling naming rights - we are going to lose the Memorial Stadium name all together. The Memorial name comes from the fact it was dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in WWI, so it changing is a bit of bad look and has rightfully rubbed some folks the wrong way. In practice everyone calls it Faurot Field anyway (the field itself is named for Don Faurot).
Regardless what they call it - if you haven't been I hope you can make a game at Faurot some day, I certainly intend to make it to Razorback for one in the next few years!

Did you forget that he played football for Mizzou while the school was in the Big 12?
He played when Mizzou was in the Big12, so no SEC ties. That was my point - that and a lot of the ranters on this forum think we should be in the Big10 (or go back to the Big12), so I'm sure there will be those that suggest he should go there too.
quote:
wasnt he shot
No - that was Ahmad Hardy (All American and first team SEC running back -which is definitely a blow for Mizzou)
Waiting on the unwarranted hate and vitriol from the SECRant posters that someone with no ties to the SEC will be a host of SEC Nation. What is the over/under on how soon someone suggests he should join the Big 10 Network.

Is there something I missed? Why wouldn't he be able to play? (or is this a reference to his injury history)?
