Yes, they had a car. But in the communities they're from, it was VERY common for people to use public transportation. People even do it now in 2024. Back then they only occasionally used their cars, but more frequently used public transportation.

It wasn't because of some plot or because Claudette was pregnant. It had already happened to her, and her name became more famous over time because people thought it happened to Rosa first.
