An Update on LSU MBB
With the addition of a lead ball handler (Jalen Cook), the pieces to the puzzle have finally begun to fit. The addition of an on-ball playmaker and scorer has opened up the offense for LSU, which is a team riddled with play finishers. Tonight the defensive effort was great, and I have hope that reducing the transition points we give up will allow this team to grow further into its identity as a spread offense. Jordan Wright has finally started to show signs of life offensively that I could not have expected prior to Jalen Cook’s first game. I would love to see Collins and Dean get more PT, but I’m excited to see the rest of the season play out.

The State of Basketball Affairs at Louisiana State University
As a lifelong fan of basketball fan, I am gravely disappointed in LSU’s athletic director Scott Woodward, the coaching staff led by Matt McMahon, and the players of this year’s roster. The effort Scott Woodward put into (ill-advisably) finding a replacement for Will Wade was lackluster at best. As an optimistic individual, I held onto hope that hiring McMahon would lead to having another coach with the cultural outreach and significance, the recruiting ability, and the passion for his players that Wade had. I was wrong. McMahon has done nothing on the court to earn our respect and hope, and has done nothing off the court as well. The lack of adjustments has been appalling, last year Adam Miller was made the sacrificial pawn for a poor scheme, and this year’s victim is Jordan Wright. I cannot only hold McMahon accountable for this, as on-court decisions can be made regarding shot selection and being intentional with the ball to minimize the damage done by being in an incorrect role. Regardless of the chicken or the egg being at fault, the product is bad. LSU is a roster of play finishers with little to no playmaking, or rim defense. Rotations are poor, but players fail to congeal often, regardless of who is on the court. The team as a whole must execute better offensively and defensively, communicating with each other on switches and in the half court offense. There should not be entire games where the players look confused and rushed. The program needs a coach that inspires confidence in our players to be themselves on the court, and needs players that are bought-in to the program’s needs on both a technical and effort level. With Wade gone, the team is rarely going to be the more talented team on the court, it should not be coached and playing like it is. I feel sorry for anyone watching this team.
