Lubbock, as such, did not really exist in 1883, and there was no reason for them to go to the panhandle. Further, there was no reason for them to cross the Brazos, as that would put them on the wrong side of the Brazos. Look at a map.
You didn't miss anything. And you are correct. There is absolutely no reason why they would leave Fort Worth and cross the Brazos River. That would make no sense, as it would put them on the southwest side of the Brazos.

This was just a case of Taylor Sheridan, the writer, thinking that no one would be smart enough to know that this made no sense. He wrote this show for teenage girls living on the west coast or east coast. If you are interested in history of Texas or history of the old west, this show is NOT for you (or for me).
Your question about the Brazos River is the reason I found this forum on the 1883 miniseries. Like Taylor Sheridan, I grew up in Fort Worth.

If this wagon train left Fort Worth, heading north to find the Oregon Trail, then they plan to cross into Indian Territory (Oklahoma). But, at that point, the Brazos River is far to the west, and goes from west Texas in a south-southeasterly direction toward central Texas and the Gulf Coast. If you are in Fort Worth or north of it, and you go west, you will NEVER need to cross the Brazos River, if you want to go to Montana.

And if you DO cross the Brazos River somewhere west of Fort Worth, then you are going south! And you will need to cross it again, heading back north if you want to go towards Montana.

It makes no sense. Did Taylor Sheridan write this?

And why do they keep calling it the "BRAH-zos"? Where are they from?
