re: How many gallons have leaked into the gulf so far?
Posted by hurricanecentral on 5/31/10 at 2:44 pm to samisrael
My bad. You're right. I work in the chemical industry and we work with 55 gal drums every day. There are 42 gallons of oil in a barrel. I stand corrected... :spank:

IMO, algae oil looks the most promising. At least our gas tanks wouldn't be competing with out stomachs. Algae farms can be set up anywhere, even in the middle of the dessert as long as fresh water can be pumped in. Additionally, I read that one acre of algae oil production can yield 100,000 gallons of fuel per year. Also, algae can be bio-tweaked to yield different classes of fuels...

Only drums that are fill 80% as per DOT shipping qualifications are 42. A drum holds 55 gallons. So, that number is a bit grey, I guess.

Well, let's calculate this and see. Deepwate Horizon blew on April 20th, so it has been spewing, according to estimates, a minimum of about 4500 barrels of HC's per day...minimum. Therefore, as of today, 31 days into May plus the last ten in April starting on the 20th brings us to a total of 41 days at 4500 bpd. Let's convert that to gallons...
(4500 barrels HC's/day)* (55 gallons HC's/barrel HC's) * (41 days) = 10,157,500 gallons of dirty HC minimum as of May 31st 2010.
Some estimates with respect to bpd are much higher than that, but there is much debate about that subject...The 15 to 70 million gallons mentioned above is not unreasonable IMO because the 4500 bpd figure is from BP. Hmmmmm, no pressure to use conservative numbers there huh?

It would just accelerate what is going to happen naturally. It will definitely disrupt efforts temporarily. It is going to be a mess either way. Just think, this is one rig. There are between 700-800 more of these operating out there... :nana:

If it is 75000 barrels per day that is a substantial withdrawal rate. Can you say " induced seismicity"?

My hat is off to anybody to works on or has worked on a deep-water rig. I have spent the last ten working heavily with the products produced in the nat gas and petro chem industries. I have a whole new respect for the guys that tap this stuff and bring it to us to use.
From a petro engineer friend of mine...

The current administration has halted drilling and is denying all permits until the "new standard" is met.
NEWSFLASH! The new standard apparently doesn't even exist yet!
Biased special interests perhaps?

In addition to meat, throw some veggies on there. Squash, Eggplant, etc...Slice the squash down it's length into two pieces and the eggplant into thick slices. Oil and season heavily...

re: How do you cook rack or lamb and leg of lamb?

I was also wondering where you get your lamb. I used to buy it at Albertsons but I haven't seen it there in quite some time.
Also, be careful, usually, you need to marinate it to negate the potential gamey flavor.
I would google some marinades that will quench it or it might be unbearable like it was for me the last time I spit roasted one.
As far as seasoning goes...garlic and rosemary or a Greek seasoning mix...

you probably need to replace the regulator or as a previous poster mentioned adjust the air/fuel ratio...
re: Old Smokey Electric Smoker

I had something similar a couple of years ago. It was a three level bullet smoker with a water pan. I would lite up hot coals in my chimney starter pour them in the bottom, add some wet wood chips to the top and smoke every meat I could get my hands on and just make an afternoon of it with friends. Some of the best times. You have inspired me to buy another one...

Schwartzeneggar and Stallone have picked horrible roles ever since Predator and Rambo respectively. I mean come on, Kindergarden Cop? Cliffhangar? The list goes on ad on.

Honestly, I probably won't watch it this year. It was interesting when it started, but it will just be more of the same...a bunch of tough guys talking smack and yelling at eachother, smoking, drinking, and trying not to get washed overboard...
