I don't disagree with your main point but there are definitely some brands that could pull off independence. Others not so much.
That said and for reasons you stated, a solid conference with as many big name brands and commitment to sports, as the SEC has, make the most sense for all.

No argument here. Always been a football and baseball school first. But it is a little crazy how our basketball program hasn't been able to find a gear. For like 15-20 years now.
That said aggy who we beat this year is probably the last school here that should be throwing any stones re basketball.

I think the SEC had to pay the Big 12 some buyouts for TX-OU to leave 2 years before contract expired.

Was such a cool town when I was there in early 90s. That’s about when Austin was ranked in one of those “best places to live” lists. The downward spiral began. Culture seems more like California now than Texas. The surrounding areas are still Texas but it’s sad that the city itself has become such a liberal crap hole. I’ve already told my daughter that if she wants to go to UT she’ll have to get a scholarship because I’m not paying for her to marinate in that crap for 4 years.
All that said I hope the football and baseball teams win all the games…

He’s an awesome guy as well. Met him that same year when I was a bouncer/bartender on Sixth St. He came in to our bar (Maggie Mae’s) when he was starting his sausage business. Super approachable and gave a ton to the homeless community in Austin.

I think half the kids playing today would wet their pants if they had to go against him.
