What the vets are telling you was true in my case. Your story is virtually identical to what we went through. Backyard, age, and options. We chose the lateral Suture procedure and it worked well, but within a year of recovery, his other leg went. Fixed that one too, but he was never the same playful dog. Absolutely no regrets about any of it. He was with us another year and a half.
Don’t know where you are, but prices seem very high compared to what we paid here in Cincinnati. We called around and found large differences here in town. Suggest you do likewise and see what you find.
Good luck.
Hope you got the 303’s. I bought mine new in I think 1988 and have loved it ever since. Have several other shotguns including 3 Citori’s that collect dust in the safe while I use the A-303 for everything. Rabbit, pheasant, quail, Skeet and Sporting Clays. Maybe it’s just that perfect fit for me, but it shoots better than any of the others no matter what I’m shooting at or what load I’m using(mostly reloads).
If you haven’t already done it I highly recommend getting them.
If I weren’t 76 years old, l’d be chasing them myself.
