Someone earlier asked about the old chris's bar in Baton Rouge. I have so many memories of the place. Sharing here hoping this site preserves the comments.
It was on North blvd, or just off it, near the original Goudchaux's store.
In high school, my group of 4 or 5 guys would convene at Chris's in the late afternoon at least once a week on a weekday. We'd play pool on a small table in the back, drink a cold beer from the fabulous fishbowl glasses they had, play music on the juke box. One of the bartenders was incredibly beautiful -- i feel like i know here name but just cant bring it to mind. To a high school kid in a dive bar, she was fantastic. We'd talk to this old guy, Vic, who barely spoke english -- former russian sailor -- always at the bar in the afternoons. Drank shots of vodka, only. We'd sometimes go on weekend nights, and it was laid back, we could order giant plates of french fries and a burger. And, they always served us beer even though we were 16 and 17. Then, for some unknown reason, over-night, the place became wildly popular on weekend nights with the LSU frat/sorority crowd -- preppy and loud. We were fascinated but it took the charm away. MY dominant memory is of the look of the bartender -- athletic and sweet and mature -- giving me a cold beer with a smile. Wish i could go back.
