Schools are already preparing for a cycle of limited openings and closures. This has been pretty well established. Elementary schools are going to be opening more often, apparently, with high schools and universities and colleges looking to alter schedules to mitigate spread. But there's going to be a series of 'waves' and this has been apparent from other epidemics. Successful implementation of mitigation will make the spikes seem less dramatic but the impact on social distancing and other measures will probably be around for a while.

Pretty sure there were cases in Miami in December and January even though they didn't announce anything officially until later. It's hard to believe that major cities didn't have community spread until that late and there had to have been travel cases earlier even than that.
