Drafter or Architect?

So I am wanting to get plans made for an addition on our home. Have had multiple quotes from architects and the price was insane($10-15k). Looking to add 500-600 sq ft. but also up for ideas on how to utilize wasted space in our current lay out. Has anyone had any experiences working with a drafter and if so, how was it? Any recommendations in the BR area?

It's really not bad. I have a patio that already has a roof connected to the house, and want to close that in and add another 200 sq ft. So 600 sq ft total. Had 2 architects tell me their price is based off a commission of the reno project, and the other was based off the price per sq ft of the total home once completed.
