re: Old front 9 tailgating is finished? Maybe not this year.

Old front 9 free parking for tailgating is all blocked up with construction equipment for the new dorms.
Per the June Board of Supervisors Meeting:
SQ-4 will include the construction of 1,266 beds of housing for First-Year students in two new residence halls at a site off South Quad Dr. currently occupied by the Touchdown Village East Lot. SQ-4 will also include the construction of off-site improvements, parking at the Old Front 9 and the mobility hub at Park & Geaux (pending University approval of the scope and permit price increases to fund the associated debt service).
Location
The housing component of SQ-4 will be located at a site off South Quad Dr. that is currently occupied by the Touchdown Village East Lot. The site is located across South Quad Dr. from the Colleges of Business and Engineering.
The temporary off-site parking at the Old Front 9 component of SQ-4 will be located at a site off South Quad Dr. west of Touchdown Village West Lot that is currently grass and trees.
If included as part of the project, the mobility hub at Park & Geaux component of SQ-4 will be located at a site off Skip Bertman Dr. that is adjacent to Tiger Park and is currently a limestone parking lot. The site is
located across from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Parking
The SQ-4 site currently provides 1212 parking spaces for commuter students. Once completed, SQ-4 will displace 697 parking spaces, and convert another 515 parking spaces to parking for residents rather than commuters. To help replace the lost commuter parking, the project will construct approximately 350 parking spaces (limestone parking lot) for commuters in an area known as the Old Front 9, further down South Quad Drive from the project site (anticipated use during 2025 Fall Semester). The construction schedule has been designed to insure that over 500 parking spaces will remain available for commuters in the fall and spring semesters during most of the construction period.
Game Day
The site for the SQ-4 buildings is currently used as RV parking for football Game Days. Athletics will relocate the RV parking to other locations, but will use the 500 remaining parking spaces onsite and the 350 spaces being constructed at the Old Front 9.

Heard it's "on schedule"
Drove past it today and they are welding in new supports above the old scoreboard, so overall improvements look to be going wider & taller than previous scoreboard.

I think it's one of these buildings next to CC's on the map. Knowing Walk Ons, they'll probably have the space right on the corner or pretty close to it. But not sure.
Here's a more updated site map: Updated Shoe Creek Leasing Map - May 2023
Only announced tenants missing on the map are Jersey Mike's going next to CC's Coffee and Bank of Zachary going up as a stand alone building at corner of entrance (the 7,000 sq. ft space available).
The announcement of Walk On's (on Sullivan near Grand Settlement Blvd.) makes me think it'll be behind the Bank of Zachary or CC's Coffee building or across the street by Starbuck/Lit Pizza/Smoothie King and not actually part of the Shoe Creek development.

Are the property millages for schools just really low in Livingston Parish? If so, why aren’t they addressing that instead of adding a 20 year sales tax, which has potential for considerable unintended consequences in terms of economic activity and investment?
Below is a 2022 Tax Statement. Living in Watson adds the fifth millage rate, but at least 4 parish-wide (P/W) millages for schools.
Millage Explanation (Millage)
1. Assessors Tax District L (6.52)
2. Assessors Tax District V (1.80)
3. Council On Aging (1.80)

8. Juvenile Detention Center (2.75)
9. Library (10.00)

Why didn't the school system, the teachers, etc work harder to get people to the polls?
Their efforts backfired. Multiple coworkers with kids in the school district were getting robocalls about going to vote "Yes" for the 1% tax on a daily/weekly basis leading up to the ballot.
LPPS wanted an off-cycle ballot to put the measure on so that most people wouldn't vote and they hoped for a push of "Yes" votes.
In the 2022 election for US Senator/Representative, there were 43K votes tabbed in Livingston Parish, the ballot March 25th for this tax.... only 17K votes.
Their recent mismanagement of funds ($2M lost in a scam) and the already high taxes in the parish (9.45%-10.45%), pushed people to show up at the polls to vote "No" and that outweighed the "Yes" votes the school system expected to get them a "W".

There should be some way to know what a career pays before college kids choose majors. Or teachers should come with a side gig built in for the third of the year they are off. Then if they decided to teach and do turnarounds, or whatever, they could feel amply compensated.
You're joking right?
Every public school system has publicly accessible salary tables for potential/current employees & general public to know salaries of employees in the district.
Also, general Google searches with websites like Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. can provide an estimated salary for industry/job titles that college kids can look at before choosing a major.
The gap in that logic is that college kids (and some adults in careers) don't look at pay scales based on their geographic location. They see a "Teacher" in Houston, TX starts out at $75K and Denham Springs, LA is $48K, the difference is cost of living is A LOT higher in Houston than Denham Springs, but the individual now expects to make $75K coming out of college and gets hit with a reality of $48K for the market they actually live and work in (which creates the "I want a raise because they get paid more" mentality).
And to tie it locally, it costs more to live in Ascension Parish over Livingston Parish. When we looked for houses in 2014, the same house in AP cost about $15K more than the house in LP. Fast forward in 2022, the gap was $25K more for a similar house.

School board meeting going to be interesting Thursday. Addendum from the Super. Sorry if it won’t load.It talks about teachers doing the bare min for the remainder of the year.
Here's the text:
Recommendation
After consulting with my senior staff and central office staff, I will be proposing the following adjustments for the remainder of this school year at our board meeting on March 30. Please see the adjustments below and reach out to me with any questions you may have.
1. Parent Conferences will only be held with our teachers, during their contracted work hours and during their unencumbered worktime, to the best of our ability.
2. All principals will have the discretion to discontinue any non-essential club or activity that takes place outside the sponsor's contracted work period for which they are not being compensated for the remainder of the school year.
3. Our current year school calendar has minutes built into the school year to allow for weather related dismissals. This year, we have only had one weather-related dismissal day, which is certainly a departure from the last few years. In those years, those extra minutes have allowed us to release our employees and schools, without them having to make up minutes to meet state requirements. As a result of the extra minutes not used this year, and pending any weather-related dismissal prior to May 19, we are recommending dismissing our schools, our students and our employees on May 19. Any employee that is contacted more than 182 days will be addressed by their direct supervisor. Dismissing this date will still allow all our schools to meet the minimum requirements for instructional minutes and will not interfere with our normal end-of-year procedures.
4. Most of our schools require their faculty to work after-hours athletic events, by manning the gate, working concessions or performing some other related activity outside of their contracted work hours. For the remainder of this year, no employee shall be required to work at these events, unless it is voluntary or that employee is compensated at the discretion of the principal. We can revisit this item during the course of the summer and into the beginning of the next school year. Employees may be compensated by the school, or the school could ask for parent volunteers to perform those duties.
5. Professional Development - This information regarding our scheduled half day on March 29 has already been released to board members and principals.
6. Much has been said about the possibility of a 4-day week in some format. This is a very complicated issue with far-reaching implications both internally and externally and would require extensive study before implementation.
Thank you for your time

At least use the same school year salary schedules
Ascension Parish Public School Salary 2022-2023
Livingston Parish Public School Salary 2022-2023
Teacher w/Bachelor's Degree
Year 1
AP - $48,783
LP - $47,117
Year 10
AP - $54,448
LP - $50,661
Year 20
AP - $60,058
LP - $56,093
Bottom line, they start out paying about the same, but Ascension Parish has more industry paying property tax mills into the school system than Livingston Parish does and Ascension isn't trying to add an additional tax on purchases to fund it.
