2005 Honda rancher 4x4 repair help

Hi everyone, I bought a quad to fix up thinking I may have it running in a CPL hours and now a month later I'm ready to trough it in da bayou lol..
It turns over and has spark but won't even try to start. Is there a way to check compression without a compression tester.. that sounds like a rhetorical question I know.
