Does anyone have any input on how many hours per week ISDS 705 is with Gibbs?

Anyone have any info on Shaughnessy versus Fawaz for ECON 705? I am currently set to take Shaughnessy but the more I read about him, the more I think I want to drop it. Everyone seems to say he's a great professor but it seems like an extreme amount of work. From what I can tell, Fawaz seems to be half the amount of work as Shaughnessy and has great reviews as well.

I want to learn as much as I can, but I also don't feel like killing myself. I've done that in two of my classes so far and it wasn't worth the headache.

Can you go further into detail on some of the busy work with Gibbs?

Highly doubt I will learn anything in this class that I haven't learned in the real world but almost everyone says Gibbs > Lin if possible.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if Choi's FIN 701 test questions are exact questions from the homework? I remember reading somewhere that the homework questions are 80% of the test questions but I'm not sure if that means they're identical or similar.

I think they will do what's required to keep the AACSB accreditation. There are very few people who will consider this an option without it and this online format seems like a total cash cow.

However, ProctorU sounds absolutely terrible. If these horror stories are accurate, students are going to lose a lot of the flexibility that was promised.

He changes the course up, so keep that in mind, but this was roughly how long I spent per week:

1: 5-8 hours (text reading, video lectures, test)
2: 25-30 hours (research paper, text reading, video lectures, test)
3: 10-15 hours (text reading, video lectures, test)
4: 25-30 hours (research paper, video lectures, test)
5: 15 hours (video lectures, test, open-book quiz)
6: 25-30 hours (research paper, video lectures, test)
7: 10 hours (open book quiz)

I completely stopped reading the textbook at a certain point because it was useless. He teaches and tests on his own flavor of marketing so learning from a textbook is counter-intuitive. His lectures are only 1-1.5 hours but it would take me 2.5-3 hours because I had to write specific notes that I could study from. Studying also took a lot of time because memorizing definitions was useless - you need to understand the concept and be able to apply that concept to a business question with five answer selections.

This is NOT an easy class. I can tell you that I was pissed off one way or another every single weekend and I'm not sure a class like FIN should be doubled up with this (though I haven't taken it, just from what I've read). His tests are awfully worded and I never felt like I was "prepared", even after hours of studying.

Keep in mind, this is just my experience. I'm sure other people fared better than I did.

I'll give you my honest review on Khan. I ended his class with a high B and I earned every single point.

He is the best and the worst teacher I've had in this program so far and I suspect that will be the case for a while. He put a TON of effort into the class and I truly learned so much (knowing nothing about Marketing prior). He does a great job of applying the course content to businesses which helps you understand the concepts as opposed to the definition. However, he is a major narcissist. He would continuously defend questions where 20-30% of the class got the answer right by saying things like "I just don't understand why there was confusion, the answer was pretty obvious". He makes you feel as if YOU are the problem and will NEVER admit that he did anything wrong. He will curve tests where the average was in the 60's and make his "curve" sound like a charity event where he's doing something he shouldn't be doing. Truthfully, everything he did felt like a sham - he made sure to tell you his papers were "only" a five-page maximum because he doesn't believe people should be writing 10-20 page papers. However, to fit all of the nonsense and detail into the research papers, I would use 11-point font with narrow margins which in normal, APA format would have been 12+ page papers.

The textbook is completely worthless in that class - don't even use it if you take it. You need to focus for 1-1.5 hours on his very boring lectures and take serious notes that need to be studied with the concepts understood. Memorizing anything is worthless in that class because the test questions are based around hypothetical business situations where you need to apply your understanding of the concept to answer the question. I spent roughly 10-15 hours per week on that class and on the three weeks that there were papers, easily 25-30+. If I'm not making his tests sound bad enough, the "case" quiz and "final" was open-book and the average for the case quiz was a 68. Having every piece of information in front of you doesn't even help with the tests.

If I had to do it over, I probably would trade in the knowledge I learned for my sanity over those seven weeks. If I got lucky with AC's (I had a nit-picker) I would have ended with an A, so YMMV depending on the AC you're assigned. I truthfully can't recommend him, but I did learn a lot. I stressed out from the first test to the time I hit the submit button on the final because I felt like I was going to end up with a C. The only reason I ended up with a high B was because of a 10-point extra credit and 8 point "course completion curve" that he "gave" students. Without the 26/400 "curve" points (extra credit included), I had a very low B. Good luck if you decide to go with him.

That's exactly who I have, Alum2019. At this point, I have no way of appeasing him because I've lost points on every assignment for the same exact issue. What's funny is that I've changed my entire writing style to try and fix it and I am still docked points every assignment.

As frustrating as he is, the structure of the class frustrates me far more. I can honestly say that four weeks in, I haven't learned a single thing. Mostly because I sit there for hours trying to memorize useless definitions instead of applying that time to understand the bigger concepts.

I'm trying to just take it for what it is, but these past few weeks have been very frustrating. I'm doing the work to simply do the work, nothing more.

Thanks, crimson. Sadly, I have been studying the quizlet since week one and can't seem to do well on these tests. I truly feel that it's ridiculous how specific the questions are considering the reading is generally 60-70+ pages. In my opinion, the tests should be more high-level with "general concept" understanding in-mind as opposed to specific, one-line definitions. It makes preparing for the tests impossible because you can never truly be "prepared" with how specific everything is.

As for your AC - that sounds awful. My AC is terrible too but for grammar reasons as opposed to content. It amazes me that they can dock you points for content when they have no way of proving what you're saying is right or wrong. The format of this class just sucks.

I need to tell you, MADM 701 is a complete nightmare to me. I am happy that others can gain knowledge out of it and enjoy the content but it's impossible for me. The textbook is awful, there is zero teaching, and I don't think I will ever apply any of this in my profession. The chapters are boring and memorizing 70+ pages of content for the tests is awful.

Kungu changed the format from last semester (40/30/30 to 50/25/25) and the academic coaches (in my experience) have been nitpicking everything. This is the definition of a "checkbox" for me and I cannot wait for it to be over.

This class desperately needs a teacher. Someone who will make videos and actually teach the concepts because the class can be interesting and helpful. However, Kungu packed up shop before the class even started and might as well not even exist. He has provided absolutely nothing for this course and I'm pretty sure that the people who liked him simply liked him because his class was easier back then than it is now (or I'm just an idiot which is certainly possible).

I am not trying to sound rude, I just don't think it's possible to like someone who doesn't put in any effort whatsoever.

I feel the exact same way, Rybo. Truthfully, I don't know what he's really providing students as the professor of this course. Outside of test, discussion, and assignment questions, there is absolutely no teaching. Assignments are graded by academic coaches and tests are automated. We were handed a textbook and pretty much told to "figure it out". Truly regretting taking it with him, and he has very high reviews which is shocking to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions on doing well on Kungu's MADM 701 tests? I am having a very, very hard time reading 60+ pages a week and taking a 30 question test that covers everything. He doesn't appear to do any teaching whatsoever, so I'm having a hard time retaining all of this information and doing well on the tests.

Any input is appreciated!

Thank you! I'm actually not pairing, it's just that my options are taking one each in AP1/AP2 and those are the only "pairings" (Choi/Fawaz AP1 | Shaugnessy/Vines AP2).

Hi Everyone,

Any suggestions between the two?

I can take FIN 701/ECON 705 with either the combination of:

Choi/Shaughnessy
Vines/Fawaz

I've heard good things about all of them, but would like to structure the classes as best as I can.

Thank you!

@zach

hahaha, pissed off is definitely a better way of putting it. It's insanely frustrating to study for a test and have the question rely on his interpretation of a word (in a question, nonetheless), rather than the actual material he supposedly taught.

@Tasha

Take everything I'm about to say with a grain of salt because I've done very mediocre on the tests but I have improved with each one so I can tell you what has worked for me.

I read the textbook, highlight all of the definitions, watch the lectures and take notes early in the week. From there, I literally watch each lecture 2-4 more times, because I am starting to believe that the textbook is truly supplementary and only "fills in the gaps" on what he doesn't cover in the lecture.

The hardest part is paying attention to everything he says, so I find myself rewinding a lot as I am listening to make sure I get it. I watch the lectures the day before the test, and directly before the test. After watching them, I read the PowerPoint and read over my notes. This is what gives me a good understanding of the content - going into the tests, I am as confident as I will be.

Then I open the test, and immediately get depressed. This step is optional, but it has happened every time. The key that I've found is to truly READ the questions multiple times. Read them out loud if you have to, because his goal is to trick you, not to test your understanding of the content. If you are 100% certain of the answer, mark it - if you're not, move on to the next question. Do this until you finish all questions, and then go back to the questions you've missed. For the remaining questions, you will probably be picking between two answers that you think can be right. Read the question as many times as it takes for you to understand what you think he is asking. Pick your remaining answers, and if you have time, go back and reread the questions/your answer selections. I never have time to do this, but it has worked for me in prior classes, so it's best to do it if you can.

Hopefully this helps - I can't say I am doing great in the class because I'm not...at all, but I have been slowly improving, so hopefully it helps. Best of luck.

Shay,
The problem with Khan isn’t so much the material – it’s that his interpretation of the material on tests differs from the objective facts he actually teaches in his lectures and the textbook. I truly believe that Khan offers a great class where you can learn a TON about marketing if you spend the time necessary. He does a great job of relating current events and different companies to the material. Now turning that knowledge into a good grade? That’s the tough one.
The issue isn’t the material though, it’s his questions on the test. From my experience, he has roughly 60-70% of the questions that are clear. What I mean by this, is that the question is clear, and there is a clear answer if you know the material. The problem occurs with the other 30-40% of the questions. It’s not so much that there are “multiple answers”, it’s that the question can be interpreted multiple ways. Being that he generally has five answer selections, three answers can easily be thrown out. Now, it’s up to you to determine how HE feels the question should be interpreted and select the correct answer.
Of course, he will never admit to this and continuously defend how it’s his students fault for misinterpreting the question during his exam reviews (especially the ones where only 20-30% of the class got the question right). However, when a C is the average grade, it’s time for the instructor to look at himself.

Hi baroqen!

Your posts have been very insightful and I appreciate you taking the time to post thorough reviews. I recently applied and plan on starting the program in May (Summer AP1). As a full-time employee, I don't want to overdo it, but I would like to finish this program as quickly as possible. Every adviser I speak with recommends taking one class at a time, but I was wondering if you can recommend classes that pair well together? For the more time intensive classes, I am comfortable taking one class a semester, but if I can pair 2 "easier" classes together for 3-4 semesters and have somewhat of a life, I think I'd rather do that than extend this out another 6+ months.

Thank you - I truly appreciate your input!
