Some additional information comparing the '03 and '12 Florida games:

2003: 2 INTs, 1 fumble, 19-33 for 231 yds passing, 56 yds rushing, 13 penalties for 99 yds, TOP 29:40 to UF’s 30:20, 3rd down conversions: 3 of 12

2012: 1 INT, 2 fumbles (although one was on the last play), 11-25 for 158 yds passing, 42 yds rushing, 8 penalties for 83 yds, TOP 22:36 to UF’s 37:24, 3rd downs: 1 of 13

A Comparison to 2003

I have not posted here in many, many years (I haven't lived in Northern Illinois since 2004 if that gives you any indication), but I think this is worth a return. I’ve been thinking about the game, our performance, our history, etc. over the last day and a half, and I hope I’ve come up with some silver lining to what is currently happening. I was trying to remember another year in which we’ve been very talented, especially on defense, but couldn’t put much together offensively early to mid season, and I think I have found the analogy.

In 2003, we had a very good defense, but didn’t do much offensively early in the year. We beat ULM 49-7, then beat a weak Arizona 59-13 in Tucson (they were 2-10 that year), then struggled to put away Western Illinois, winning 35-7 (shades of Towson). The next game was that crazy one against Georgia in which we scored very late to win 17-10, but we didn’t do much offensively that game. In fact, UGA outgained us 411 to 285. David Greene had 314 yards passing.

After UGA, we turned around and whipped Miss. St. 41-6, then played Florida at home. If you remember, we did nothing offensively that game and wound up losing 19-7 to a decent Florida team. We could not run the ball, only rushing for 56 net yards on 24 rushes (you can get old box scores at Historic Stats). Mauck was decent but certainly not very good, going 19-33 for 231 yards and 2 INTs. I remember watching us not be able to get anything going in that game, seemingly completely out of sync, both in execution and in scheme.

From there, though, we seemed to slowly find an offensive rhythm. Mauck got better, and Justin Vincent emerged as the premier RB. Ironically, our next game in ’03 was also against South Carolina, and we won big in Columbia 33-7. Now I realize that this SC team is much better than that one, but this game is at home for us, and the first big home game of the year. Also, we only fell in the polls in ’03 after the Florida loss from #6 to #10, similar to our short fall yesterday. After SC, we went on a roll, blowing out Auburn 31-7, La Tech 49-10, Alabama 27-3 (a much worse Bama than this year obviously), then beat Ole Miss 17-14 in that great game against Eli & Co. Of course, you know how the rest of the season played out.

I’m not saying this team is going to run the tables and win the MNC like we did in ’03, but I do find some reason to be optimistic. We still have an outstanding defense (remember, we still only gave up 237 yards on Saturday), and we have good talent on offense. If we can patch the holes in our O line and they can execute effectively, I think we can still match up with anyone on the schedule. Miles has a big job to do this week in pulling this team back together, but I think we see a much improved offense on Saturday. Maybe history will repeat itself.

Agreed, and I'd like to eventually go back to play Old MacDonald. I'm a big fan of Doak's, and I think PacDunes was outstanding. I liked Trails more than you, maybe because we had a very mild day. I think Coore & Crenshaw did a lot with a much less desirable piece of dirt than the other two.

I'll be in Seattle for the game, and I played Bandon last year. nycajun, in case you haven't checked into this, Bandon is REALLY hard to get to. Last year I went from Atlanta to Portland, then from Portland to North Bend on a puddle jumper, then took a one hour bus/shuttle ride to the resort. Absolutely well worth it -- it is unlike any golf resort, at least in the US. But, it is very remote.

Haven't posted in a long time, but I'm compelled to say this. I was in attendance last night, and as I remarked as we were leaving, at this point I am more comfortable with both our football and basketball coaches than I ever have been since I started following LSU athletics as a kid 30 years ago. Both coaches are truly class acts, and I was very impressed with both. Miles was articulate, funny, comfortable -- basically everything he is not during normal press conferences. And I was very impressed with Johnson, especially his willingness to be frank with the fans (for example, he mentioned that Bo Spencer sometimes has a problem being on the same page with the coaching staff). All in all, great event, and I'm proud to be a Tiger.
Highly recommend ending the evening at the Supper Club. They have this strange membership policy where you pay $2 for a "membership card" which gets you access to the club. There should be a band Saturday night -- two years ago Lynam played, which was very entertaining. Check out the shot bus on the back patio. Good times there in '06, despite the game outcome.

Brian Doyle Murray is, of course, most famous for his role as the caddy master Lou in Caddyshack.

Good call on Janice. George wanted to do it in the kitchen because its the most sociable room in the house. And I forgot about Raquel Welch. Long night over at Liza's.

When Kramer goes out to LA (in my mind, I'm already there), he runs into Fred Savage and tries to pitch him a script, freaking the Wonder Years guy out. Also, Kramer ends up as Murphy Brown's secretary, and Candice Bergen makes an appearance as Murphy Brown.

They keep coming to me:

The daughter of the NBC exec with the cold when Jerry and George pitch their TV concept of a show about nothing was played by Denise Richards. George was caught staring at her cleavage. "Looking at cleavage is like looking at the sun -- you take a peek, and then you look away!"

Couple more women:

Jami Gertz could not spare a square for Elaine.

Amanda Peet dated Jerry but lived with another guy.

Oh, and "Hunky Tony" was MTV's Dan Cortese.

Kathy Griffin played Susan's annoying (she plays that role well) friend who screwed up Jerry's appearance on the Charles Grodin show.

And another from Desperate Housewives -- Sue Ellen Mischke, the "braless wonder" and the heir to the O'Henry Candy Bar fortune.

How can we forget the infamous Neidermeyer who played Bob "The Maestro" Cobb?

Kristen Davis from Sex and the City dated Jerry (they had a dispute over something that fell in the toilet).

Christa Miller from the Drew Carey Show dated George. He could have draped himself in velvet for all she cared. She "like, liked" him.

Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, famous as Mrs. Stanwyck from Fletch, also dated Jerry in that same episode. She didn't mind eating Jerry's partially eaten pecans.

The girl from Gilmore Girls, Lauren Graham, and her mom battled for Jerry's speed dial. And the guy from that show, Scott Patterson, was sponge-worthy for Elaine.
