99% chance these are going to be paper core discs. Slight chance they could be aluminum, but most of the ones that came from the Army were paper. I've digitized a few over the years. It's kind of a crapshoot as far as what kind of quality you'll get out of them. I've had to deal with some that were recorded with way too low of a signal going to the cutting head - ends up mostly being surface noise. Others skip like crazy because the thread that would come out as they were being cut would get tangled in the cutting head.

Welcome to pm me. As Marco said, you definitely don't want to play these with a standard needle. I've got one of the Ortofon ones he mentioned. Also, make sure to not make an attempt at cleaning it with any sort of liquid before you know exactly what kind of material you are dealing with.
This ST-70 was a full rebuild...Not much besides the chassis and transformers reamin. I run it with a quad of old 60's Mullard EL34's.

edit: Wasn't running quite right for a while due to user error :drunkards: Replacing the quad cap and tweaking the bias circuitry got it all back in good order.
I've been on the road all weekend and was stuck with Spotify and my headphones. Counting down the workday...Really ready to fire up some albums tonight.

Marco, Super cool that you were able to pick up that amp! I still really regret not making my parents hold on to our old component stereo that I grew up with. It was a 70's pioneer rig - all pretty decent stuff. I was a teenager when they got rid of it and just didn't realize the mistake. Pretty sure they gave it all away to a neighbor.

I'm curious to see if your opinions of the 2105 change after the recap. I bought my 2505 fully restored and recapped. I really like it. Super smooth and plenty of power for the speakers I have, but I still really prefer my Dynaco ST-70 when it's running correctly. I switched the Dynaco from the Martin Logan's when I started having some biasing issues with it. I had to replace the quad cap and a couple of transistors in it, so I wanted to run it on the KLH's for a few months before I switch it back to the ML's. Those speakers can take a beating, so if anything went wrong with the amp, they'd most likely survive. It's been running fine so I think I'm about ready to switch back.
Nice record choice!

I love the look of the McIntosh amps from that era...What speakers do you normally run with the 2105?
I love that brochure. If they print it, it must be true, right? Even with new caps, it's a pretty noisy preamp, but really dynamic. I still enjoy it. Have it hooked up to my Meridian M10's. I've always struggled with those speakers being really tiring, but the C24 tames that harshness a bit.

Would love to see your record storage, too! Here's my first one for the night. Let me know if my pic resolution is too much. Still figuring this out..

Very nice! Love your CD player...about to fix a drink and put on an album.
Lol...It's a 10 dollar shadowbox, some sticky stencil paper, spray paint and an LED strip...glad it fooled you, though!
Here's a better picture of the whole rig. Using my Thorens 125 tonight for one of my favorite albums. Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World

Desperately in need of some cable management...I've been rotating stuff in and out of this system and haven't quite settled on everything yet...Hoping to get to fixing all of the cables up later this week.

I have no excuse. I've been reading the thread since the beginning and just never joined in...The rack is a homemade flexy rack. Just some threaded rods, spare lumber, sorbothan rings and some nuts and bolts. The MC2505 is powering the Martin Logan's and Ar-2a's. The Dynaco is with the KLH Twelves...My main turntable is a Basis 1400 with a Benz Ace. Also have some Meridian M-10's in my workshop. Need a bigger main room...
Effing amazing. When I have a bad day at work, there's no other album I'd rather hear. I recently came across this promo copy at a local record store. It's one of the early pressings mastered by Robert Ludwig at Sterling Sound....It literally sparkles in comparison to the more recent vinyl and digital versions.
Hey everyone...long time lurker. Time for a first post. I've been enjoying all of the posts in here and seeing all of the great stereo rigs (especially Marco's). Here's mine...Spinning an old promo copy of Bobby Charles' masterpiece.
