Any chance Les would talk to Richt...

Posted by bret on 12/1/15 at 10:20 am
....about the OC job?

Not predicting it will happen. Just wondering if any rumors to that effect have been started?
Y'all were very cordial and welcoming to this guest.

Just a couple of rambling thoughts in no particular order:

Obviously, I'm happy Jimbo isn't going to LSU. Just as obviously, your fan base seems to be very divided about Miles. The greeting he got at Death Valley was an indication of just how classy tiger fans are.

My reaction when I watched the AD make his announcement: This guy looks like he's telling folks a close family member just died. I saw no joy or in his face, no glee in his voice, and no non-verbal positive statement in any manner. I saw a guy who looked like he had just been told he was fired.

I have no idea on how Miles should fix his offense. But, I will make one observation about the DC. Kevin Steele was DC for FSU in the early 2000s. Lot's of folks thought he was brought in to be Bobby's replacement. He did a good job for us. But after a coule of years he left for Alabama allegedly to be closer to his family. He stayed there a year or two and went to Clemson where he was anything but successful. Seems like he has struggled everywhere he's gone since he left FSU. I have no idea why he really lefrt FSU, but I will be shocked if he turns out to be an elite DC at LSU or anywhere else.

Will Les adapt and change his offensive philosophy? Will he go out and hire his own version of Lane Kiffin? Who are his close friends in the coaching community that he might go to for advice? (Gary Patterson? Jim Harbaugh - Les in a Michigan Man, Bob Stoops, etc.)

Once again, thanks for your hospitality.

I have two requests for you in 2016

Beat Florida! Beat Bama!

I was watching the espn feed. Got cut off very early. From what I could see the expression on the AD's face and the tone of his voice was more like that of a man announcing the death of a family member.

He sure didn't seem happy about it.

But, like I say, I didn't see it all. Could have totally misread it.

Whatever else it means, it means FSU fans won't have to go through what y'all have gone through the past week or two.

Thanks for letting me visit. I may drop in an say a few words occasionally.

Two requests: Beat the gators. Beat Bama!

Saaturday morning greetings from a Nole.

Below is a message posted on a Nole board. It is a private board, so I will delete names. The poster is a very good friend of mine and I do not doubt anything he says in his post. But, remember, he is posting a message he got. He is not saying the message will turn out to be true. After his message, I will post my reply.

His message:

Okay, this is completely serious. This happened to me this evening.

I got a text from my buddy on our hunting lease. (Name deleted by bret) texts me that he got a message from a friend who is (starter on FSU team, name deleted by bret) cousin.

I'm serious. This happened.

It's a secret, but Jimbo will have an announcement that he's leaving. He may or may not coach the bowl game.

Now, my friend (name deleted) is a very intelligent, smart man and knowledgeable football guy. He holds a very responsible job.

But, Jimbo is gone.

Then I have a friend from HS who posts on Facebook that there is a "secret" that Jimbo wants to go to Red Stick.

Having passed on these vital details, I can rest knowing I've done my part to freak bret out.

All of the above are true events.
These things occurred in the last 3 hours.
Now, imho, its total crap.
I cannot imagine leaving an INCREDIBLY LOADED 2016 FSU team for the hot mess of LSU. But, we'll see.
My concern is FSU scoring 28-31 and beating UF by 21 to 31 points.

My reply:

Bottom line: Anybody who knows anything ain't talking. Anybody who's talking knows no more than I know.

I have no idea whether or not Jimbo will leave. Therefore I would put the odds at 50/50. If he leaves it will be because of some combination of the following reasons.

1. Divorce and all the mess surrounding that (custody, visitation, etc.)
2. Medical care for his son.
3. Working relationship with administration (AD/prez) at FSU.

If he stays it will be because of some combination of the following reasons.

1. Divorce and all the mess surrounding that (custody, visitation, etc.)
2. Medical care for his son.
3. Working relationship with administration (AD/prez) at FSU.

I think the lure of the SEC, more money, chance to beat Saban every year, etc. will have very little effect on his decision. I think his thoughts on recruiting, winning the national championship (which school would be better) will have very little impact on his decision.
**************

My condolences to you Tiger fans. You are going through emotional turmoil right now. And, if Jimbo comes to Baton Rouge, then Nole fans will be going through the same thing. We have already started throwing out names of who we want to replace him.

A note about James Coley.

He was with Jimbo for a few years at FSU. Did a good job. Was a young coach looking to move up the coaching ladder. So, he took the Miami job. No problem.

His strength was recruiting, specifically in South Florida. That is huge for FSU. Gotta compete against Miami and Florida for the best talent. (Think Dalvin Cook.)

But, he was never the guy who developed the QBs at FSU.

That was Jimbo's job. And, it still is. He was the OC/QB coach under Bobby. JHe coached E. J. Manuel, Christian Ponder and Winston - all first round draft picks. (This year will be his first QB who isn't a first round pick.)

He hired Randy Sanders this year and gave him the title of QB coach.

But, make no mistake about it, Jimbo is very hands on with the QB. He is the QB developer. And, he's very good at it.

If he brings in Coley it will be for recruiting purposes, not because Coley is gifted with QBs.

Another LSU/FSU connection.

Back in the 1980s, FSU played at LSU five years in a row. (Bowden's early years when FSU had to schedule away games to make money.)

Bobby tells the story in one of his books - many years later.

He was called by LSU early in the season. He was told that they were making a coaching change at the end of the season and he was their guy. He asked them to wait until after the LSU game for him to make a decision. He said his thinking was this, "If I lose the game to LSU then I'll take the job. But, if I win the game, then maybe we really can get the job done here and complete at the national level." Noles won, Bobby stayed, and the rest is FSU history.

Sad note: LSU hired Bo Rein from NCSU. He never coached a game. He died in a private plane crash while on a recruiting trip.

It really sounds like you have a strong affinity for LSU. Stop denying yourself the opportunity to join the Tiger faithful, follow Jimbo on over. Given you're age, you haven't much time

Hehe. That's what I tell people when they find out it's my birthday. "You better wish me a happy birthday. This might be your last chance."

My first memories of LSU football.

Thanks to all of you for your discussions concerning the coaching situation.

Just thought I'd throw a little something that might be more light hearted. All this post will really prove is that I am old.

I have two "first time memories" of LSU.

1. Billy Cannon. I was a kid when he played at LSU. But, my dad was a college football nut. We used to listen to LSU at night, WWL. I remember him with the return that has gone down in football, not just LSU lore. I remember listening to the game. Honesty: I don't recall if the opponent was Ole Miss or Bama. I think it was Bama, but I'm not sure.

2. Paul Dietzel and the Chinese Bandits. NCAA has some strange substitution rules back then. So, Deitzel came up with a creative way to circumvent those rules. Had his defense run a couple of offensive plays at the end of a quarter (I think, but once again not sure) because that allowed him to have more freedom in substitutions the next quarter.

Because LSU played so many night games, I grew up somewhat of an LSU fan. Whenever we were in the car on Saturday nights in the Fall we could count on getting the LSU football game on WWL, no matter where we were in the southeast.

Good memories.

And, BTW, LSU has the coolest midfield logo in the country. No other logo comes close.

Welcome. Can you shed some light on the supposed beef between jimbo and your AD?

There might be. But, all indications are Jimbo has a good working relationship between himself, the AD and the president.

But, who knows what goes on when the lights and the mikes are off?

Soooooooo, does that include you?

Yes, it does. I am doing nothing more that speculating and guessing. I've tried to make it very clear that I am just a fan with absolutely no connections or insider information.

Just enjoying the discussion. Thanks for allowing me to participate.

Hmmm. Your post rattled my memory cage. The coaching carousel has changed a lot in the past 25 years. I recall the very public spectacle Jeremy Foley made when he was looking for a replacement for Spurrier. Flew to Norman. Bob Stoops turned him down. Flew to Denver. Mike Shanahan turned him down. Flew to New Orleans. Ron Zook accepted the offer.

ADs have become better at hiding their actions since then, but still there is normally some sense of who they will hire.

Seems to me the last true surprise was when Nick Saban was introduced at LSU. My memory may be failing me, but I seem to recall that when he walked out onto the platform to be introduced nobody even knew he was a candidate, much less that he was in Louisiana.

Am I remembering that correctly, or even close?

Maybe LSU does have a surprise coming. Maybe Pete Carroll will walk out onto the stage. (Just kidding about Carroll.)

IF Jimbo leaves, who do you want as the next head coach of Florida State?

Me? Obviously my pick isn't real popular with many who post here. I would make my first call to Hugh Freeze. If he can recruit and win at Ole Miss, he certainly should be able to recruit and win at FSU.

And, Les Miles would be on the first page of my list.

re: My speculation on LSU's next coach.

Like I said, I know nothing. Just guessing. I am not at all aware of the "LSU perspective."

For all I know they could be looking at Rich Rod (he first came into the spotlight by being Tommy Bowden's OC with an undefeated Tulane team, didn't he?). He could have some LSU connections.

It could be Mark D'Antonio. (Wouldn't Michigan State love losing another coach to LSU?)

It could be Gus Malzahn for all I know.

Just curious, if it isn't Jimbo, who are some guys that would seem to be a "fit" at LSU?

That's the general consensus. But, I know nothing more than what I read on the net.

My speculation on LSU's next coach.

Posted by bret on 11/27/15 at 12:39 pm
Note: I am not an insider. I have no connections. I have followed the coaching carousel as a hobby for better than 20 years. What I am about to say is based on nothing more than experience, gut feeling, and guessing.

1. I think Miles is gone. I think LSU has his replacement in hand. You don't ask boosters to pony up 15 million bucks without knowing what the next step is. People with that kind of money don't buy a pig in a poke. They will want to know, "So, who's gonna replace him? And, how much is he gonna cost us?" before they write the check. You also don't treat Les the way he has been treated the last couple of weeks if you haven't already decided to fire him.

2. Negotiations for Miles replacement began (through agents, attornies, etc.) began several weeks ago. An agreement in principle, including virtually everything but signing the contract, has been reached.

2. I suspect the next coach will come from the following list (in no particular order): Jimbo Fisher, Hugh Freeze, Dan Mullen, Chip Kelly, Mike Gundy.

3. Those who know what is going on aren't talking. Those who are talking are just guessing.

4. I have no idea if Jimbo is the guy or not. If he is I suspect FSU will go after those same names I mentioned above. Personally, Hugh Freeze would be my top candidate.

Thoughts on Fisher from a Nole fan.

Let me introduce myself. I am a Nole. I come in peace. I am a guest here. I appreciate being allowed to post here. I do not take that for granted.

A couple of things y'all may or may not know about Jimbo. His decision to leave FSU for LSU, or stay at FSU, will be based on far more than just football.

You can look up the following information for more details if you wish. Here it is in a nutshell. Two major things are going on in his life.

1. He is going through a divorce. He has two young children (under 15). I have no idea what the custody and visitation parameters are at the present time. I do know he is very close to both of them.

2. The younger of those two kids has a very rare disease. It is life threatening. (Life expectancy is under 30.) Jimbo is very pleased with the medical care he is getting in Tallahassee. I'm sure there are outstanding doctors in Louisiana. I have no idea who the doctors are or where they are located. (Could be in Gainesville at Shands Hospital.)

Just pointing out that with the divorce and with the medical situation, Jimbo will have more on his plate than just a football decision.

I won't make this post any longer. I'll post my thoughts on who I think y'all will end up with (yes, I think Les is toast) in a different post.

Thanks for allowing me to enter your community.
