In part yes. In part also by the way the tonearm on your turntable is balanced.
The balance of your tone arm is adjusted to be a certain height above the turntable, and thicker vinyl raises the height of your vinyl - enough to put your tonearm off balance.
If you have a turntable with anti-skating (with an adjustable weight on the far side of the tonearm) you should be able to adjust it slightly in order to keep the record in the grooves (note the position of the dial so you can switch back and forth).
If you don't you can always try the old "stick a penny on top of your cartridge" trick (not highly recommended but sometimes unavoidable).
